How could wolves change the course of a river. After all, they’re not beavers or anything. They have big fangs, and are the stuff of countless stories around campfires.

During my musings on wolves and men, the attempts to re-introduce them into the Northern Rockies, I thought a lot about what Barry Lopez had said about so many of us having separated ourselves from nature by seeing it as ‘the other’. Here he was speaking about the oldest metaphor for those living in North America being…nature.
