What the whole controversy seems to show is that in our depleted democracy wherein the only “vote” that matters (literally, if vote-suppressing Republicans have their way…), is measured in dollars, the right has taken caveat emptor into previously unattained heights: they no longer have to even call shit Shinola. It sells either way.

David Wittman’s (aka DJ Dave) popular video, “Whole Foods Parking Lot,” is a hilarious send-up of some of the apparent moral contradictions of participants in today’s postmodern counter-culture. It’s a counter-culture only in the sense that it has more to do with the checkout counter than it does any challenge to the culture at large. Hell, it is the culture at large.

Back in August, the founder and CEO of Whole Paycheck Foods pissed off quite a few of his customers with his right-wing screed on health care reform in the WSJ. As it turns out, this op-ed wasn’t the product of a quirky, idiosyncratic independent, but rather, a fairly typical wingnut, as we learn in this week’s New Yorker.
