A Homeland Security Department analyst and a 2009 report he helped produce on right-wing extremism is receiving increased attention after Wade Michael Page, a 40-year-old white supremacist and military veteran, shot and killed six worshipers and wounded others, including a police officer, at a Sikh temple in Wisconsin.

Daryl Johnson worked for the Homeland Security Department and put together a report that was leaked to a “conservative radio shock jock” in southern California named Roger Hedgecock. The report, “Rightwing Extremism: Current Economic and Political Climate Fueling Resurgence in Radicalization and Recruitment,” which the shock jock made public in 2009, set off a conservative media frenzy.

Imagine if David Duke were U.S. Attorney General, or the head of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Imagine if ICE head Duke proclaimed loudly, at a rally produced by Sheriff Joe Arpaio:

“Mexicans, Asians and Negroes that arrive here do not even believe that this country belongs to us, to the white man!”

Unequivocally made clear is the fact that the White House rejects a framework that specifically sets out a strategy, which focuses efforts and resources on Islamic extremism. It promotes the idea that all groups and individuals are susceptible to violent extremism and not all violent extremists are or have been Muslims. It concludes, “Any solution that focuses on a single, current form of violent extremism, without regard to other threats, will fail to secure” America and America’s communities. It finds government officials and the American public should not “stigmatize or blame communities because of the actions of a handful of individuals.”
