Today – We launch our 2012 Membership Drive and invite readers who have just started visiting Firedoglake or have been with us for years to join our membership program for as low at $5/month or $45/year. You can join at different levels, and each has membership benefits and gifts, but you’ll also get a sense of accomplishment when you realize all the membership program does.

Dr. Margaret Flowers and Kevin Zeese, two of the principle organizers of the October2011 protest in Washington DC, discussed their plans for the upcoming occupation of Freedom Plaza with FDL members at our recent webinar. The demonstration will start on Thursday October 6, and continue until they believe the government responds in a meaningful way — “symbolic gestures” are not enough.

In the United States and most democracies, voters don’t primarily use elections to choose between competing ideologies or plans. First and foremost, voters use the ballot to depose those they think failed to govern efficiently. Elections are often a referendum on the party in power.

I was up late doing some thinking after the GOP debate on why membership at FDL is so important to me, and what benefits it offers to others who join. I just graduated in 2009, and I like to think that is not all that long ago. I was 23 years old, on the job hunt, sending out 20 resumes a day, interviewing at temp-to-hire firms, willing to take anything and trying to show off my credentials.
I realized that I had a lot of experience on campaigns, and my grades were great, but I did not “get that involved.” What I am getting at here is that FDL is a great member benefits program to become a part of as a young college student or recent graduate.

I just finished compiling all the great questions and sending out answers to guests of the conference call last week with Lt. Dan Choi.
What a riveting and passionate event!

One of the most exciting and well received benefits of our membership program is our incredible webinars. Twice a month or more we are lucky enough to have guest speakers come and speak with exclusively with our members. Our guests range from Congressman Alan Grayson, to Dan Ellsberg, and Nancy Atlman, covering a wide array of topics. Last week, Michael Moore, writer and director of the highest grossing documentaries in history; Farenheit 9/11, and Bowling for Columbine, joined us unexpectedly with Dan Ellsberg and Josh Koster to talk about 2012 election strategies.
