In a discussion if US-Russia relations hosted by the Aspen Institute of Ideas former US National Security Advisor Stephen Hadley proclaimed that the US government, via the CIA, should send arms to the Ukraine government then lie about it. Hadley made the statement after claiming to value honesty and calling Russia dishonest.

In an interview with Bloomberg News Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov asserted that Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Victoria Nuland had meetings with the Ukrainian neofascist group Right Sector in Washington DC. The Right Sector has been involved in numerous killings including the burning of pro-Russian supporters in Odessa.

Yesterday the Senate Foreign Relations Committee had a hearing on US policy in Ukraine. The hearing exposes deep divisions both in strategy and perspective. Senators grilled Assistant Secretary, European and Eurasian Affairs Victoria Nuland, Deputy Assistant Secretary, Russia, Ukraine, and Eurasia Evelyn Farkas and Assistant Secretary, Terrorist Financing, Department of the Treasury Daniel Glaser as to why the US policy in Ukraine seemed not to be working.

Though Ukraine has a meager military compared to Russia, the Ukraine Defense Minister has now given his resignation to the interim government, which they accepted. What was he supposed to do exactly – pretend the Russians didn’t know Ukraine’s forces were weaker than their own? Pretend that Crimea is not majority ethnic Russian that wanted to join the Russian Federation? Why hasn’t Interim Prime Minister Yatsenyuk resigned?

Did someone forget to brief President Obama and tell him that the constitutional government of Ukraine was overthrown? Because Obama just completed a press conference where he claimed Crimea could not vote to join the Russian Federation because it violated Ukraine’s “Constitution.”

Funny things happen when you foment an uprising. After factions in Western Ukraine overthrew the Russian backed government, Russia has responded by invading parts of Eastern Ukraine, specifically the Crimea, which is dominated by Russian speakers and those friendly to Russian influence. The invasion sparked a rhetorical threat from President Obama that there would be “consequences” for Russia though he never made exactly clear what that meant as numerous observers questioned what Obama even could do.

The Kiev Post reports on an alleged conversation between U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine Geoffrey Pyatt and U.S. Assistant Secretary of State Victoria Nuland. Nuland is quoted as saying “Fuck the Eu” on the recording.
