Dream Defenders Bring Us Blacked Out History Month

Since their inception this past Summer, The Dream Defenders quickly emerged as a force to be reckoned with.

Formed in Florida, the group came to prominence during the Zimmerman trial with their fierce advocacy against Stand Your Ground Laws, captivating a mainstream audience with their boldness and refusal to back down. The group consists of young people advocating on their own behalf. They’re scrappy, insistent and they have a lot of heart– characteristics that they’re not shy about displaying. Thinking big and organizing with an emphasis on solidarity and our shared struggle it’s hard not to feel better about the state of the world simply knowing they exist.

 

This Speech Was Cut From Last Week’s March on Washington

Fifty years ago, at 19 years old, John Lewis was the youngest person to speak at the March on Washington.  In the days leading up to its commemoration, we’ve been reminded that Lewis’ words almost went unheard.  After the initial hand wringing from the Kennedy administration had subsided, and fearing embarrassment or violence, intense work was done to ensure that the content of the march didn’t veer into “radical” territory.  At the time, critics like Malcolm X denounced the March as something that was in fact orchestrated by the White House.

Pressure Mounts For Moderate Republicans To Support the DREAM Act

Senator George LeMieux (R-FL) is starting to feel the heat of pro-migrant voters, specifically Latino voters. Saturday, Univision aired a debate in which current Florida governor and U.S. Senate nominee Charlie Crist came out in support of the DREAM Act. Thursday, Representative Kendrick Meek (D-FL), and also a nominee for U.S. Senate, hand delivered a letter to LeMieux.
