By: Michael Whitney Monday November 16, 2009 7:15 pm

Activists from Firedoglake, CREDO, and Democracy for America have placed hundreds of calls to progressive Members of Congress to organize opposition to a final health care bill that has triggers to delay a public option, or that allows states to opt their citizens out of choosing the public health insurance option. Reps. Raul Grijalva and Michael Capuano both committed to opposing such a bill last week.

Carper’s No Good, Super Terrible, Completely Awful, New New New “Alternative” to the Public Option

By: Jon Walker Wednesday November 11, 2009 8:19 am

What Carper did was take the two worst aspects of the two most worthless ideas (a trigger and zero government oversight), and combine them into one super-awful proposal. The entity created is not national, would not be large enough to negotiate low rates, would not be available on day one, and would not answer to Congress. Carper has created a “trigger for co-ops” proposal in an attempt to get 60 votes, but, not only would the idea do nothing to help control costs, but it needlessly weakens two worthless ideas Snowe already supports.

Lessons Learned in VA and NJ: Is Rahm Emanuel Orchestrating 2010 Democratic Massacre?

By: Jane Hamsher Wednesday November 4, 2009 7:59 am

Rahm doesn’t think about Democratic turnout. His reputation for “winning a Democratic majority” rests on his ability as a self-promoter to take credit for victories that happened in spite of him. The truth is that his “act more like Republicans” strategy just hasn’t worked out, and we’re getting whiffs of the disaster it spells for Democrats who follow it.

Blanche Lincoln Signals Support for Triggers, but Not for Anything Worth Triggering

By: Jon Walker Tuesday October 20, 2009 8:50 am

Blanche Lincoln is working hard to become the most stalwart defender of the for-profit health insurance industry among Senate Democrats (that is an impressive accomplishment because Ben Nelson and Joe Lieberman are giving her a real run for her money).   Last week, Blanche Lincoln said she was maybe open to a delayed trigger [...]

The Public Option Trigger: Naïveté, Insanity, or Trickery?

By: Jon Walker Wednesday October 14, 2009 2:05 pm

Olympia Snowe and Rahm Emanuel are both pushing hard for their “trigger” idea recently. The idea is the public option would only go into effect if the health insurance industry kept raising people’s rates at a rapid pace. (I believe, after studying the trigger created by Snowe, that it was designed to never be [...]
