Rock and roll has been the music of rebellion and social change since the 1950s, and each successive wave of youths have discovered its power (chords) and embraced its do-it-yourself aesthetic. Punk rock and technology, from cassette tapes to MP3 and file sharing have made music the most easily understood and easy to identify mode of rebellious self-expression. The music, lyrics, and yes, fashion have been and are still threatening to the powers that be: Los Angeles Police chief Daryl Gates viewed punk rock, especially the band Black Flag, as a major threat, regularly sending in riot cops for their shows and says Black Flag drummer Greg Cameron:

Rock Bands in Uproar Over Song Usage on Limbaugh’s Show

Several musicians and bands are more than a little annoyed that their songs are being used as atmospheric music on the Rush Limbaugh show, among them the band Rush, whose song “The Spirit of Radio” was playing in the background when the conservative windbag called Sandra Fluke “slut…prostitute.”

Limbaugh has since (kind of) apologized to Fluke, and has removed his remarks from his shows’ transcripts after over forty advertisers removed themselves from his show. Meanwhile Rush the band, Peter Gabriel, Rage Against the Machine’s Tom Morello, and the Fabulous Thunderbirds all want their tunes gone from Rush the Limbaugh’s radio program.

Occupy LA: Now Approaching Its Fourth Week Anniversary

Occupy Los Angeles is feeling the effects, both positive and negative, of its growth. Sanitation costs –hauling out garbage and cleaning the porta potties– are taking up most of the donations, and meals must now be delivered from restaurants or “catered” by certified kitchens in order to comply with the health department until the proper permits are in place. Occupy LA’s cook staff did have access to a kitchen for the first two weeks andthey are still looking for another. Pizza is still coming in and people are also relying on their own resources, providing food for themselves and those around them.

Occupy LA One Week Anniversary: Festival Against the Machine

Saturday marked the one week anniversary of Occupy LA so to celebrate, festive live music and cake! People made screened tee shirts, painted, talked, danced and wandered about the Occupy LA encampment, dropped off donated goods, and shared fruit from their trees. Bands played all day and special guest Tom Morello delivered a spirited set then stayed to chat with Occupiers.

Today I joined with Michael Stipe, Viggo Mortensen, Daniel Ellsberg, Roseanne Cash, Tom Morello, Jesselyn Raddick, Shepherd Fairey and others to demand that President Obama and Secretary of Defense Gates investigate the degrading treatment that Bradley Manning is being subjected to at the Quantico brig.
