The CLASS Act was inserted into the Affordable Care Act as a sort of tribute to the late Ted Kennedy, the bill’s longtime champion. It enacts a federal long-term care insurance program, a kind of public option for long-term care. The Obama Administration, emails now show, didn’t like it from the beginning. And now, there are signs that they may not put it into practice.

New York State is in the process of passing historic legislation requiring that guns registered in NY have this micro-stamping feature. California has already passed such a law. Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Maryland, Wisconsin, and Illinois are all working on passing similar laws. This is such a common sense piece of legislation without any obvious down side that you have to wonder why it’s being approached at state-level and not a piece of federal legislation.

You could see this one coming. As soon as a local poll on the Massachusetts Senate race showed the Republican dead even among likely voters with Democratic candidate Martha Coakley (now MA’s Attorney General), you knew there would be leaks blaming Coakley for not conducting an inspiring or smart campaign.
Nevermind that a more recent poll by the Boston Globe shows Coakley with a solid 15 percentage point lead. No, the first poll showing Coakley at risk was a perfect opportunity to blame the candidate instead of the real culprits dragging down Democrats everywhere.

Politico says it’s not going to happen. But if Obama were to meet with Kennedy, it would provide a great opportunity for Kennedy to kick Obama’s ass. And for Obama to pivot strategies and embrace the public option he has been promising all along.
