Benedict’s Choice for New Philly Archbishop Signals Increased Church vs. State Battles Ahead

By: Saturday July 23, 2011 10:00 am

This past week, Pope Benedict XVI named Denver Archbishop Charles J. Chaput to succeed Cardinal Justin Rigali as head of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. While this is an in-house decision of the Roman Catholic church, it will have major implications far beyond Philly, and reaches deeply into the broader political discussions in the US and beyond. Chaput is a leading conservative voice on church and state, and a strong defender of the church in general, and he’s stepping into the biggest church vs. state battle going on right now outside of Ireland.

Naming Chaput to head up the Philadelphia Archdiocese put one of Benedict’s most articulate and powerful voices front and center in those battles, and also changes the secular political calculus for 2012 in Pennsylvania and beyond.

The Manufactured Outrage of Joe Lieberman

By: Tuesday December 15, 2009 9:31 am

Joe Lieberman is going to jam through the PhRMA deal that the White House negotiated. It will be of tremendous financial benefit to the pharmaceutical companies and achieve the objectives of the lobbying shops who have paid his wife. Responsible journalists should be asking serious questions about this connection.

CNN’s situation room just mentioned it, and Joe himself doesn’t seem to be happy about the heat. Poor thing. If you’d like to see more attention paid to fact that Komen is using money raised by those who are “racing for the cure” to give to Hadassah Lieberman, please consider donating to the campaign.

Calling on James Denton, Ellen DeGeneres and Other Stars: No More “Race for the Cure” Cancer Money to Hadassah Lieberman

By: Monday December 14, 2009 8:43 am

Breast cancer is the leading cause of death among women age 35-44. The people who are anguished over the suffering of those they love and want to help in some meaningful way are attracted to Komen by celebrity names like James Woods, Andie MacDowell, Neil Patrick Harris, Jennifer Tilly, John Ondrasik, Kimberly Locke, Marcia Cross, Mimi Rogers, Neil Patrick Harris, Ann Curry and Aimee Teegarden. They are racing their hearts out because they think it will help others to keep from suffering, they aren’t doing it so the money can be used as a pass-through to Joe Lieberman through his wife to block health care reform.

Please join me in asking these celebrities to call on the Komen Foundation to stop giving money to Hadassah Lieberman and sign the petition.
