Over the past few weeks Monsanto, DuPont and other large corporations have flooded California with millions of dollars in ads against Proposition 37, which would require the labeling of food containing genetically modified ingredients. Two new polls confirm the well-funded negative campaign has managed to significantly reduce support for the ballot measure.

Before the debate Ohio appeared to be President Obama’s firewall, the must-win swing state for Romney where Obama held a big lead. Directly following the debate the polling has become very tight. The latest CNN poll has Obama up by four in Ohio, while SurveyUSA gives Obama only a single point lead.

Washington State is on track to make history this November by voting to legalize marijuana. Initiative 502, which would legalize possession of up to an ounce of marijuana for adults and create a regulated system for its sale, continues to do extremely well in the polling.

Some excellent news from SurveyUSA, but don’t let it make you complacent. SurveyUSA recently asked 700 state of Washington adults “A new law passed by the legislature would allow same-sex couples to marry in Washington state. Should this law be approved? Or rejected?”. The response:
Approved – 56%
Rejected – 38%
Not Sure – 6%

A solid majority of registered voters in Washington State say they plan to support I-502, an initiative to legalize, tax and regulate marijuana for adults over the age of 21. A new SurveyUSA poll found 55 percent support the ballot initiative, while just 32 percent oppose the measure.

The SAFE California Campaign has managed to qualify for the November ballot an initiative that would abolish the death penalty and replace it with life without the possibility of parole. Polling indicates the campaign will have a bit of an up hill fight in convincing voters to abolish the death penalty. A poll by SurveyUSA from last month found that 61% of registered voters in California would vote to keep the death penalty, but initiative backers hope to convince voters the move would save millions in state costs.

A new poll found that 62 percent of likely California voters would support a ballot initiative to regulate marijuana like wine. This is the highest level of support I’ve seen in any poll of California about the issue of marijuana legalization.

The Republican victory in the House was truly historic. It was one of the largest congressional swings in American history, but it should not have come as a shock to any Democrat in Congress. For almost a year it was plainly evident to the DCCC and others that the party had screwed up royally and was facing massive loses.

Proposition 19, which would legalize and regulate production and distribution of marijuana in California, is trailing slightly in the two most recent polls from Field and PPP. While the polling is still relatively close, this is not a good sign. For Prop 19 to pass, there will need to be a very large turnout among supporters and young voters who are not being included in the pollsters’ “likely voter” models.
