Yesterday, the NY Times ran self-serving press release op-ed from Congressman Bart Stupak (D-Coat Hanger), in which he claims his harmless little amendment was no worse than current law. The truth is, most health policy experts agree that the Stupak amendment would effectively ban reproductive choice services coverage in the exchanges created under health care reform.

One Voice For Choice: Stupak, Can You Hear Us Now? |
| By: Marta Evry Monday December 7, 2009 9:12 am |
This weekend scores of One Voice For Choice volunteers gathered in the homes of their friends and neighbors in Texas and California and began reaching out to thousands of pro-choice (and very likely) Democratic voters across the country.
Stupak, can you hear us now? It’s the sound of your bluff being called. Motivated voters will not allow you to hold health care reform hostage at the expense of a woman’s right to chose.

For me, one of the more frustrating aspects of organizing against the Stupak amendment has been comments I’ve heard – usually from younger, more affluent women – that they just didn’t think the Stupak amendment was that big a deal.
Surely it wasn’t enough to jeopardize the entire health care reform bill over. After all, why should the federal government be footing the bill to pay for someone else’s “poor judgment”?
One Voice For Choice: Don’t Let Stupak and Nelson Hold Health Care Reform Hostage |

Yesterday, Venice For Change and FDL Action PAC announced “One Voice For Choice”, a unique phone bank effort that will call into the districts of Democratic lawmakers who voted for the Stupak amendment. We are targeting likely voters who are pro-choice and asking them to tell their member of Congress to vote for a final health care reform bill that’s free of the Stupak ban.
The response has been tremendous. In only 24 hours, over half a dozen phone banks have popped up in my home state of California, and one in the heart of liberal Texas – Austin!

Announcing One Voice For Choice |
| By: Jane Hamsher Wednesday December 2, 2009 8:00 am |
Today we’re announcing “One Voice for Choice,” a national phone bank that will launch calls into the districts of the Representatives who voted for Stupak. We’ll be targeting likely Democratic voters who are pro-choice. We’ll be letting them know that Stupak goes WAY past Hyde. And we’ll be asking them to sign their names to a letter to their member of Congress, demanding that they not make Stupak the litmus test for their vote.

Large single issue organizations are dependent on grants from huge foundations and other wealthy donors. They can ignore the concerns of their small donors. The politicians and big media assume they speak for huge numbers of people because they have a lot of donors. But all they really do is crowd out the voices of huge numbers of citizens.
