On CBS Face the Nation, yesterday, Rick Santorum left CBS’ Bob Schieffer repeatedly incredulous as Santorum gave us what increasingly sounds like his own personal version of Catholic dogma. He’s been hinting that mainline religion in America — read, Protestants — have led America astray, that while President Obama may claim to be a Christian, his governing religion was not based on the Bible. But his remarks on environmental stewardship are equally appalling.

Reducing waste, improving government efficiency and eliminating corrupting corporate welfare must be a top goal of progressives. People must be convinced the government can do a reasonable job for them in order to trust any expansion of it. Unfortunately, the terrible pro-corporate manner in which President Obama and the Democratic Party mishandled TARP, HAMP and health care reform has renewed the need for progressives to go back to basics. Progressives need to win the trust of regular Americans and prove that Democrats are capable of making the government work efficiently and for everyone’s benefit.
