Late Night: Qapla’ : First Klingon Elected to Office in New York State

Klingon Chancellor Martok, under his Earth name of John Hertzler, has been elected to the Ulysses Town Board in Tompkins County, near Ithaca.

Hertzler, an adjunct professor at Cornell University’s film and theater department, has the distinction of being one of only four actors to play seven different characters on the various “Star Trek” incarnations. A working actor, he has also appeared in numerous other television series, and is slated to appear in the upcoming film, Star Trek: Anaxar, which begins production in 2014.

Star Trek was groundbreaking when it launched in 1966. A multi-racial crew, including a half-human/ half-Vulcan first officer and as Whoopie Goldberg recounts from her first time seeing the show as a child: “a black lady on television who isn’t a maid.”

Star Trek had a progressive political foundation and celebrated diversity without making it an issue (the series featured the first interracial kiss), touched on pre-marital sex (Captain Kirk sitting on the bed pulls on his boots in Yeoman Janice Rand’s berth), and addressed other issues of the 1960s, focusing on humanitarian and peace-keeping missions–and was the first time fans had ever rallied to save a show.

Pull Up a Chair and Have a Laugh

Good morning pups-o-fire! Pull up a chair this morning and let’s share a laugh. It’s established science that laughter has the ability to help heal physical wounds and ailments; but beyond that, it’s also wonderful at healing rifts between people. Everybody can remember getting over a huge altercation with somebody in their lives that was quickly forgiven over a shared belly laugh. I, myself, have ended arguments with a laugh over how silly the argument was.
