Why does it take Senator Barbara B to tell Mr. Banana Holder to do his job? Why won’t he do his job the way he should? Why does Mr. Banana Holder even have his job if he won’t punish people who break the law?

The FEC is hopelessly broken at this stage, but the Senate Ethics Committee appears to have taken its role seriously, and they aren’t going to bury the report just because Ensign would rather run and hide than face up to his actions. They cannot fully disclose the materials gathered over the course of the investigation, but the public statement has the potential to be damning. And they could choose to make a referral to the Justice Department for criminal charges as well.

John Ensign, the Nevada Senator still reeling from an adultery and corruption scandal, will resign tomorrow, according to several published reports. Rep. Dean Heller, who has already announced a run for Ensign’s seat in the Senate, will be appointed as an interim replacement for Ensign by Governor Brian Sandoval, giving him the power of incumbency and a leg up in what should be a competitive Senate election in 2012. This leaves Heller’s seat open, and a special election will ensue.

It’s simply incredible that Ensign still has a job, not because of the adultery, but because of the clear corruption of his dealings. But I don’t know how much longer that will last, with investigators poking around.
