Today Scotland is voting whether to go for full independence. It is very close – which may not necessarily be the way you want it when you are right next door to the other country.

England really has been a bit of dick towards Scotland (as John Oliver puts it) — going all the way back to “The Hammer of the Scots,” King Edward I, who apparently made it his life’s mission, his Great Cause, to conquer Scotland. After he whipped Wales’s ass, that is.
I wouldn’t dare insert myself in the upcoming “Yea or Nay” on the referendum for Scotland’s independence, but here’s Groundskeeper Willie to explain the vote.

Some of the biggest banks in Scotland are threatening to leave if the people vote for independence from Britain. In a move designed to pressure the people of Scotland to stay within the UK, the Royal Bank of Scotland and Lloyds Banking Group have said they will relocate if Scotland votes for independence in an upcoming referendum. The banks have said thousands of jobs will be lost and that it will be more difficult for people in Scotland to get a mortgage.

On September 18 the people of Scotland will vote on whether or not they think Scotland should be an independent country. Polling currently indicates the referendum will likely fail but has significant support.
If even after centuries a nation with a shared language and landmass is still seriously debating if it should actually be a single country, that should tell us something.
