Caught With Prostitute, Investigator in Secret Service Prostitution Scandal Resigns

By: Wednesday November 5, 2014 1:59 pm

The investigator who led the Department of Homeland Security’s internal review of the Secret Service’s 2012 prostitution scandal, David Nieland, claimed hotel records showed a member of the White House advance team signed a prostitute into his room the same night. The White House denied one of its people was involved and a formal report of the scandal by Nieland did not mention the White House staffer.

The staffer alleged to have been involved is now a policy adviser at the State Department. His father also works in the Obama administration. After the report became public, Nieland said he was asked to delete information about the White House staffer because it was potentially damaging to the administration during an election year.

A Little Pissed Off: Shonda Rhimes Calls Out DGA While Accepting Diversity Award

By: Sunday February 2, 2014 7:14 pm

Shonda Rhimes has come into prominence as a well-versed television writer, director, and producer.  Responsible for bringing the world shows that include Grey’s Anatomy, Private Practice, and Scandal, Rhimes has shown a commitment to plugging diverse characters into over the top plot lines.  Her shows are all dramatic and addicting; Scandal has garnered a committed Twitter following and a legion of fans who self-identify as “Gladiators”.  Both Scandal and Grey’s Anatomy– having completed their 3rd and 10th seasons, respectively- enjoy solid ratings and resonate with diverse audiences.

That’s why it comes as no surprise that Rhimes and her production partner Betsy Beers were awarded the “Diversity Trophy” at the Directors Guild of America Awards.

Come Saturday Morning: Chris Christie and Tony Sutton

By: Saturday January 11, 2014 6:45 am

Watching the hubris-greased fall of Chris Christie has made me think a lot about the parallels between him and a similarly thuggish, similarly disgraced fellow Republican: Tony Sutton, who not that long ago was the most powerful Republican in the State of Minnesota, and whose exploits I have limned before at this website.

Our Hot Date Tonight: We’re Live Blogging the Emmys at 5pm West Coast Time

By: Sunday September 22, 2013 4:00 pm

Starting at 5pm West Coast time Sunday–that’s tonight!–we’ll be live blogging Emmys, with a bowl of popcorn, a case of Perrier (water, not Jouët), and of course chocolate. The Emmys are broadcast live on CBS, with Neil Patrick Harris hosting. And Elton John will be opening the show as a tribute to Liberace. I sense the Russian government refusing to issue his visa to perform in 3…2…1!

FDL Book Salon Welcomes Graham A. Rayman, The NYPD Tapes: A Shocking Story of Cops, Cover-ups, and Courage

By: Sunday September 1, 2013 1:59 pm

Adrian Schoolcraft is the whistleblowing police officer at the center of one of the more bizarre of the NYPD’s ongoing scandals.

Schoolcraft worked in the relatively high-crime 81st precinct in Brooklyn, and he was not a happy camper as a cop. A loner, he began to secretly tape recording precinct roll calls at which commanding officers ordered patrol cops like himself to make it difficult for victims of crimes to make formal complaints. Equally disturbing, cops were also ordered to downgrade felonies — serious crimes — to less serious misdemeanors so that the precinct would appear safer than it actually was.

Schoolcraft’s tape recordings might well have been ignored or forgotten, had not the police department then done something that was indeed shocking.

Tea Party Ties to Koch Brothers Ignored in IRS Scandal

By: Thursday May 30, 2013 5:55 am

The Internal Revenue Service, not the most popular government agency to begin with, has been in the midst of a scatological squall for the past 3 weeks over their treatment of tea party groups. According to an agency spokesperson, organizations garnered additional scrutiny of their applications for non-profit status for having “Tea Party, Patriot, or 9/12” in the application materials. Non-profit status is granted by the IRS for “social welfare organizations” and federal law puts legal limits to the amount of overtly political things you can do if you are applying to be a non-profit, and thus tax-exempt.

In the coverage of this story, now a scandal, there are a couple of important facts that some of the reporting has missed.

In a flashback scene on last Thursday night’s (1/17/2013) episode of ABC’s searing political drama Scandal, a cabal of five voted to rig the upcoming presidential election to ensure that their man “Fitz” won. The personal agendas of four of them were revealed to viewers.

Story Notes for Scandal’s Producer Shonda Rhimes

By: Wednesday January 2, 2013 6:01 pm

Over the last ten years, I, like many others, have written to numerous media and entertainment outlets to implore them to help us get rid of all electronic voting machines and bring democracy to our voting system and our country. To no avail, alas.

And then I saw a recent episode of Scandal, entitled “Defiance,” which did just this, in part, by addressing charges of election fraud in Defiance, Ohio in a fictional format.

Walmart CEOs Concealed Evidence of Foreign Bribery Scandal

By: Monday November 26, 2012 9:20 am

Each Black Friday we hear all about Walmart, from the jaw-dropping discounts that make competing customers resort to gunplay – to the deaths by trampling. This year, we’ve been hearing about coordinated strikes, walk-outs and protests as Walmart workers have begun to resent the depths of their corporate exploitation.

But we don’t hear about the rampant corruption charged in Walmart’s expansion operations as multiple bribery probes continue to widen.Walmart is the biggest retailer in known history, employing one million US workers and making $3.63 billion in profits just in the most recent quarter.
