BuzzFeed and The ‘Tongues of Fire’

When Buzzfeed posted an article attacking Max Blumenthal by using his father many were left in shock and awe. The author, Rosie Gray, and Blumenthal had a combative history, but using someone’s dad to attack them? That takes the politics of personal destruction to whole new level, surely this was the worst kind of personal attack.

What may have turned out to be the most disturbing element introduced by Eric Alterman, was his bringing Max Blumenthal’s father, Sidney Blumenthal, into the argument. What seemed to some as an innocuous comment in Alterman’s first article, has turned into a sordid campaign by even more sordid people, to attack both the elder Blumenthal, and Hillary and Bill Clinton, and their foundation. The hits have devolved from Buzzfeed.com to Breitbart.com to white supremacist Robert Stacy McCain’s blog, as the threats have escalated.

Buzzfeed’s Ben Smith Says He ‘Hates Advocacy Journalism’ While Defending Smear on Max Blumenthal

Buzzfeed Editor-in-Chief Ben Smith, speaking at the Columbia School of Journalism, disclosed that he “hated” advocacy journalism instead preferring the theoretical (arguably mythical) objective journalism. A posture where reporters are to present themselves as detached and free from personal bias.

BuzzFeed Hacks Away At Mint Press News’ Syria Story

Viral media and cat picture experts BuzzFeed decided to once again enter the fray of actual journalism, it didn’t go well. Known for mostly writing and rewriting press releases and practicing access journalism (which is to say not-journalism) the listcle masters decided they would tell the “inside story” of Mint Press News.
