FDL Book Salon Welcomes Stephen Glain, State vs. Defense: The Battle to Define America’s Empire

By: Zaid Jilani Sunday September 11, 2011 1:59 pm

As U.S. drones continue to take flight over Pakistani soil and that country’s restive population becomes more and more resentful of what it views as excessive foreign meddling in its affairs by various actors – the West, Al Qaeda-inspired terrorists, and its old rival India – I think the topic of empire is more relevant than ever to the two countries that I consider my own.

The Dangers of Political Resentment

By: Glenn W. Smith Sunday September 4, 2011 9:30 am

Resentment has long driven much of American politics, and global politics too. Think of antebellum southern planters who resented northern manufacturers and moral “meddlers” we know as abolitionists. Think of yesterday and today’s anti-immigrant xenophobes. Think of anti-labor tycoons who resent the notion that their workers are human beings to whom a crude definition of “property” should not apply.

But the Right has no monopoly on resentment. Sadly, I’ve heard its call, and acted upon it.

To End Debt Ceiling Crisis, Reagan and Clinton Would’ve Invoked the 14th

By: Blue Texan Sunday July 31, 2011 12:56 pm

Rewarding the Republicans for their hostage-taking — aside from being bad policy — is disastrous politics. By caving to a bunch of extremely unpopular ideologues, Obama looks weak and feckless, not like “the adult in the room.”

Another Republican Admits Ronald Reagan Wasn’t Right-Wing Enough for Today’s GOP

By: Blue Texan Wednesday July 6, 2011 10:30 am

The notion that Ronald Reagan couldn’t make it out of the primary in today’s Teahadist GOP has been a favorite meme on the left for years. After all, Reagan raised taxes eleven times, signed one of the largest tax increases in US history, signed a SHAMNESTY! bill, sought to ban nuclear weapons, passed one of the most liberal abortion laws in the country, was a former union president as well as a divorced former Democrat who was married to a practitioner of astrology.

Well, this idea is increasingly popular on the right as well.

Obama Prepared to Sell Out Rank and File Democrats on Medicare to Enhance Personal Brand

By: Jon Walker Wednesday June 29, 2011 8:37 am

Getting Republicans to sign onto a deal could enhance Obama’s personal brand. It would show him to be a serious “deficit hawk,” able to rise above partisan politics and cut a deal. But he would be helping himself at the expense of everyone else in the party. By giving the Republicans the political “out” they want on Medicare privatization, he could be dealing a devastating blow to everyone else in his own party who hoped to use the Ryan vote against their GOP opponents in 2012.

Obama’s Biggest First Term Failure: Forcefully Articulating a Rebuke of Reaganism

By: Blue Texan Monday June 20, 2011 10:30 am

I think if the President had spent the last three years repeating some variation of this, he’d be in much better shape — as would the Democratic Party.

Pawlenty Hammered on Unrealistic Economic Plan – on Fox News

By: David Dayen Monday June 13, 2011 11:31 am

You know things are bad for Republican candidate when his plan for cutting trillions in taxes is panned on Fox “News”. Tim Pawlenty, too boring to get any attention except with a radical plan that is too radical for Republicans.

Sunday Late Night: CNN Spotlights Hate

By: Teddy Partridge Sunday June 12, 2011 8:01 pm

Tony Perkins is not genuine himself. Tony Perkins lies. Tony Perkins hates. Why does CNN provide him op-ed space to blather about Values nowadays, as if his opinion is important and valuable to GOP primary voters?

Late Night: Is That a Ceiling Cat on Your Head, or Are You Running for President?

By: Lisa Derrick Tuesday April 19, 2011 8:00 pm

To paraphrase a line from the recent Trump roast, would America vote for a man whose autobiography has four Chapter 11s? Are we that celebrity struck, mindless and bloated? Yes, in the past Ronald Reagan, a not so great actor with scary hair and a weird tan, was elected President, but for Gods’ sakes he was an an actor. Trump is a salesman. And/or a better performance art piece than Sarah Palin designed to distract us from some real issues. And he’s endorsed by Gary “Only-Victoria-Jackson-is-Crazier” Busey!
