Last night Rick Santorum wildly beat expectations by pulling off the triple play, three wins in three contests. Santorum won the caucuses in both Minnesota and Colorado. He also scored a huge victory in the non-binding Missouri primary. Romney and Gingrich both did poorly, making the first seem vulnerable and the second less credible as the anit-Romney alternative.

Romney Won Nevada Caucus with 50 Percent of Low Turnout

The Nevada Republican party has finally certified the results from the Nevada caucus that took place on Saturday. Mitt Romney was able to win the caucus with 50 percent of the vote. But GOP voter turnout was much lower than in 2008.

Mitt Romney Dominates the Nevada Caucus

The large Mormon vote in the state helped Romney win by such a large margin. According to the entrance polls, Mormons made up about one quarter of the overall vote; and of those, 91 percent supported Romney. Importantly though, Romney still would have won the state even without the Mormon vote. Romney also won the Catholic vote, the Protestant vote, and the “other Christian” vote.

But since then the momentum in the state has swung strongly to Mitt Romney, who now appears heading to a solid victory tonight. All recent polls have him with significant leads and differ only on just how big the lead is.

If Newt Gingrich manages to secure the nomination, Obama will have a radically easier time of getting re-elected than if Romney is the nominee. In a general election Gingrich is simply not electable according to both Gallup’s polling of swing states and most other major pollsters.
