#D12 Gulf Port Action, One Year Later

By: Wednesday December 12, 2012 7:15 pm

One year ago today, Occupy Oakland declared a National Day of Action against Goldman-Sachs.

The action would center on the Port of Oakland, which they shut down for over two days. Solidarity actions around the country took place at other ports, at Walmart distribution centers, and Goldman-Sachs offices in New York City.

About 200 occupiers from around Texas gathered at Occupy Houston’s encampment, Tranquility Park, and from there traveled to the Port of Houston where we blockaded the main entrance. There were twenty arrests.

Rolling Jubilee and the Pesky Tax Problem

By: Wednesday December 5, 2012 3:01 pm

When I checked last, Rolling Jubilee had raised $456K, and hoped to use it to wipe out over $9.1 million of debt. Unfortunately, there is a risk that some debt forgiveness will be treated as income by the Internal Revenue Service. Yves Smith gives a detailed description of the problems, and urges Rolling Jubilee to spend the money it takes to hire a serious tax lawyer. I agree with her that the FAQ on the site isn’t satisfactory, and I hope the organizers will deal with the problem.

Will OWS’ Rolling Jubilee Cause Tax Issues For Debtors? IRS Says: NO.

By: Sunday November 18, 2012 1:00 pm

The Rolling Jubilee debt elimination project is one of the best ideas to come out of the Occupy Wall Street movement. Yet some, most notably Yves Smith of Naked Capitalism, have raised concerns that eliminating debt in this fashion might create tax liabilities for the former debtors.

It turns out that the Rolling Jubilee folks have already dealt with this potential issue.

OWS’ Rolling Jubilee Seeks to Buy and Forgive Debt

By: Saturday November 10, 2012 11:20 am

The Occupy Wall Street movement has sustained many offshoots, including the high-level wonkery of Occupy the SEC and the direct-action foreclosure defense of Occupy Our Homes. Now another offshoot will attempt an innovative solution to the private debt crisis, which has been welling up in America for decades.

This campaign began back in September with Strike Debt, which started with activists handing out 5,000 copies of what they called the “Debt Resistor’s Operations Manual,” a guide for debtors on how to navigate the often-sleazy world of debt collection and credit reports and bankruptcy processes. Providing this knowledge gave power to those drowning in debt on how to resist.
