Was Santorum A Good Candidate or Simply the Least Awful of the Non-Romneys?

Even though Rick Santorum has ended his campaign for the Republican nomination, he did achieve something rather impressive. Despite having little money or media buzz, he managed to become the only true anti-Romney alternative in what was a very crowded field. But is Santorum really a highly skilled politician, or was he simply the least bad Romney alternative in a field of highly flawed candidates? The answer could play an important role in a possible 2016 run.

At an afternoon rally Rick Santorum announced that he was effectively ending his campaign for the Republican Party’s Presidential nomination. In the past few weeks it has become clear that there was no way Santorum could stop Romney, particularly after Santorum lost Illinois and Wisconsin. Both the Republican establishment and the GOP base have come around to accepting that Romney is inevitable.

The bulk of the Republican base has come around to accepting that Mitt Romney will be their nominee. According to Pew Research 74% of Republicans and Republican leaning voters think he will definitely get the nomination. Santorum now runs the risk of overstaying his welcome by continuing to contest a primary that a plurality want to be over.

Voters are currently going to the polls to vote in the Republican primaries in Wisconsin, Maryland and the District of Columbia. So far it looks like it should be a very good night for Mitt Romney. He has overwhelming leads in Maryland and D.C. and a modest lead in Wisconsin, which now looks like a must win for Santorum to stop Romney’s growing inevitability.

How did it come to be that what once was the Party of Lincoln is now the Party of David Duke and Strom Thurmond? It was a simple business calculation — Corporate America and rich people in general wanted to get out of paying the taxes needed to sustain our societal infrastructure, and they figured the best way to do that was to manipulate race hatreds among whites in order to convince them that societal infrastructure helped black people more than white people.

It succeeded very well in cutting the taxes on the rich and on corporations, but that success came at the price of poisoning the minds of the Republicans, from the lowliest grunt worker to elite-level opinion controllers like Noonan and Carlson, with the deep-set sickness of bigotry.
