God Save the Queen!

As all of Great Britain gears up for the Royal Push, replete with lots of souvenirs–because what would be the birth of another Royal (can we call it a “crowning”?) without some tea towels and china to mark the blessed occasion–England and Wales have passed another milestone: Marriage equality.

Queen Elizabeth to Sign Commonwealth Charter Promoting Gay Rights and Gender Equality

Sunday, on live television, Queen Elizabeth will sign a new Commonwealth Charter “designed to stamp out discrimination against homosexual people and promote the ‘empowerment’ of women – a key part of a new drive to boost human rights and living standards across the Commonwealth,” the Daily Mail reports.

Olympic Thoughts

Maybe Danny Boyle’s $42 million Olympic opening spectacle wasn’t a song of homage to working people, but it played one on TV.

It included a tribute to Great Britain’s National Health Service. The workers who built the arena served as honor guards for the arrival of the Olympic torch. There was a gritty look at the Industrial Revolution. And there were comic bits poking fun at the grandiosity of the event, including filmed sketch plus stunt-double-skydive that featured the Queen.
