Oh Elton, Elton. I am so confused, but I just can’t quit you. Remember when his remark about being very happy with civil unions became a rallying cry for Prop 8 and anti-equality forces? Once there was a hue and cry about his naivety ignorance of basic facts, he came around and ended up playing an amazing concert as a fundraiser for AFER and becoming a spokesperson for marriage equality. Then he played Rush Limbaugh’s wedding for huge fee. (I’d like to hope that he donated that fee to pro-equality groups as a puckish fuck you to the forces at the EIB, but I guess I’ll never know).

RT’s claim that President Obama still doesn’t want to talk to President Putin, notwithstanding yesterday’s affirmation via MSNBC that he continues to hope the Russian President will change his mind about Syria, is a piddling piece of disinformation compared to the bigger picture (it’s always the Big Picture that counts) that is taking shape in St. Petersburg.

The attempt by the Obama Administration to bring the international community together for a war on Syria is not going well. First the UN refused to support the action, then the British Parliament balked, and now Russia and Iran are starting to heat up the rhetoric used to oppose the war.

In recent weeks, Russian Authorities have repeatedly vowed to uphold their anti-gay laws that prohibit the mere expression of supporting gay rights– qualifying the act of doing so as propaganda, at the 2014 Winter Olympics. Thus far, Putin’s rearing head has refused to blink in the face of international scrutiny. While the games have yet to begin in earnest, the decision to do so is already proving to be a total shitshow with Russian athletes now being at the center of controversy.

As a pastor, I’m used to reading texts closely, taking them phrase by phrase and parsing out the multiple layers of meaning. I do this with religious texts and also with secular documents, from mortgage forms to SCOTUS opinions to presidential speeches. Words matter, and people who play fast and loose with them, or who don’t treat them with respect, really irritate me.
Like the International Olympic Committee.
Instead of using the Olympic Charter to tell athletes to sit down and shut up, the IOC ought to re-read it. If they tried that, they might notice words and phrases like “promoting a peaceful society” and “human dignity” and “sport is a human right . . . without discrimination” and so on. They might just realize that they have no option but to offer Putin a simple choice: repeal the anti-gay law and prosecute the thugs engaged in gay-bashing, or say goodbye to the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympic Games.

Russia is a mess, as this video shows. They can’t drive, and now with many in the US boycotting Stolichnaya vodka and other Russian booze brands in protest of Putin’s crackdown on LGBT, the populace will have a lot more to drink, which will only make the driving worse.
