FDL Movie Night: After Tiller

By: Monday August 25, 2014 4:59 pm

After Tiller follows the lives of the last four remaining doctors in the United States who perform late-term abortions, those in which the fetus is over 25 weeks old. Two of these doctors who worked with Dr. Tiller at his Wichita clinic — Dr. Shelley Sella, and Dr. Susan Robinson — begin working at a clinic in New Mexico. Meanwhile, Tiller’s friend, Dr.Warren Hern continues to maintain his practice in Boulder, Colorado, and Nebraska-based Dr. LeRoy Carhart is eventually forced out of Nebraska by legislation.

Filmmakers Martha Shane and Lana Wilson explore the lives of these four doctors–their histories, their practices and what led them to perform third trimester abortions, which account for only 1% of all abortions performed in the United States.

Late Night: Kelly Carlin, Coming Out of The Abortion Closet

By: Monday May 19, 2014 8:00 pm

“I’m outing myself here, I’m outing myself in my (forthcoming) book. I had two abortions when I was a teenager. I was a reckless crazy girl… I was really privileged (and) I was lucky. I had parents who had money. I had access to access to a clinic, it was private and it was the way it has been done for rich people forever.”

Carlin describes the personal guilt and shame she has surrounding that period in her life.

Reproductive Rights in a State of Emergency

By: Thursday January 23, 2014 6:07 pm

This Wednesday marked the 41st anniversary of the Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision, which protected a women’s decision to have an abortion was marked by thousands of anti-abortion activists taking part in a march for life in Washington, D.C. Carrying signs saying “I AM the pro-life generation”, and “conceived from rape, I love my life” marches converged on the National Mall Wednesday and marched to the Supreme Court.

Go and Tell the Grandchildren

By: Wednesday August 28, 2013 5:45 pm

Prior to having my own children, I seriously studied and in some way practiced how I would answer the inevitable questions. Unlike the deaths of other forbearers, details of yours are as loaded as the gun that killed you. I knew I had to tell the grandchildren the truth at some point, and, if nothing less, thought a written record would best address the problem of evil I had to narrate. In the event I croaked prematurely, I wanted them to hear the stories from me—or in my words, but never mustered the courage to write the answers until now.

Why the Pro-Choice Movement Needs to Talk About Children

By: Tuesday August 13, 2013 11:55 am

I was recently reminded of the old pro-choice slogan, “Every Child a Wanted Child.” Along with my personal favorite slogan, “Pro-Child, Pro-Family, Pro-Choice,” this decades-old mantra succinctly sums up a powerful pro-choice argument: that supporting reproductive rights is also supporting families, children, and choice.

Rick Perry Voodoo Dolls: This Witch Says “Banish Them!”

By: Tuesday July 16, 2013 8:00 pm

I am practicing witch, and I can laugh at my belief system; I do easily and often. It is just as goofy sounding as other people’s (Transubstantiation? Space lice from exploding volcanoes? Flying donkey?). But I do cringe at things like these Rick Perry voodoo dolls because they perpetuate dangerous, off-base stereotypes and do nothing to help either pro-choice factions or non-Christians.

Abortion Rights Are at a Crossroads: This Is NOT a Time to Lay Low – It Is Time for Massive Uncompromising Struggle!

By: Saturday July 13, 2013 10:30 am

Across the country, people are waking up to the state of emergency facing the right to abortion. As legislators in Texas push hard to close down 37 of 42 abortion clinics statewide, new laws in North Carolina would close four of their five remaining clinics. Meanwhile, Ohio’s recently passed budget could close as many as three abortion clinics. North Dakota, on August 1st, may become the first state to effectively ban abortion. Already Mississippi’s last abortion clinic is merely an appellate ruling away from closure. We could go on.

If we do not reverse this trajectory now, we will condemn future generations of women and girls to forced motherhood.

Austin’s Feminist Vigilante Gang vs. Texas Rally for Life

By: Wednesday January 30, 2013 10:55 am

Saturday at the Texas Capitol, thousands (by mainstream media estimates) gathered to celebrate the war on women’s rights. Many had been bused in from around the state to reinforce the numbers in the notoriously liberal capitol city. Standing against them were a tiny group, Austin’s newly formed “Feminist Vigilante Gang.”

Plan B: When You Don’t Fight, You Get Walked on Later

By: Wednesday December 7, 2011 7:15 pm

During the health care reform fight the women’s reproductive rights groups and legislators were basically sold out. President Obama decided to cut a deal with Bart Stupak’s Gang. He assumed that the pro-choice and women legislators in the House and pro-choice groups would just fall in line, and they did with very little fighting. Today’s decision to stop the OTC availability of Plan B morning after contraception is another example of what happens when you don’t extract a price.
