While attending the White House Correspondents’ dinner Attorney General Eric Holder admitted to the Huffington Post that President Obama misled Rolling Stone about federal marijuana law. Obama claimed he “can’t nullify Congressional law” when it comes to medical marijuana, even though the Controlled Substance Act actually gives the Executive branch the authority to “reschedule” (reclassify) marijuana without Congressional action.

The Politics of Lying |
| By: cocktailhag Sunday April 29, 2012 8:00 pm |
One of my favorite authors, David Wise, published a book in 1973 called The Politics of Lying: Government Deception, Secrecy, and Power. At the time, of course, Watergate was rapidly unfolding, and the first President since Andrew Johnson was about to be impeached for, well, lying. I know it seems quaint today, when actually telling the truth about anything is seen as more politically damaging, but back then, people were still offended about being lied to, for which reason liars at least had some fear of getting caught.
Late Night FDL: Happy Earth Day |
| By: cocktailhag Sunday April 22, 2012 8:00 pm |
It’s painfully ironic that Dagwood Bumstead finally got around to celebrating Earth Day today, by napping instead of mowing the lawn, at the same time Earth Day became more of a wake than anything to celebrate. Thanks to our brain-dead media and bought-off politicians in both parties, fewer Americans than at any time since the 1970′s give a tinker’s damn whether or not our planet turns into an uninhabitable, sweltering, toxic cesspool.
Bloomberg Tells Obama, Congress: We Should Raise the Minimum Wage |
| By: Jon Walker Tuesday April 17, 2012 1:15 pm |
The editors at Bloomberg have a good op-ed calling for the federal government to raise the pathetically low minimum wage. It is truly pathetic that a very business friendly, business news company is doing more to actively promote raising the minimum wage than a Democratic President and Congress.
This Election Is a Referendum on Obama |
| By: Jon Walker Tuesday April 17, 2012 6:50 am |
CNN is out with a new poll showing President Obama leading Mitt Romney 52% to 43%. While I don’t put much stock in horse race results this far out from the election, the poll does contain a pair of questions that I feel neatly summarize what will likely be one of the inherent dynamics of this election. The poll found the election will primarily be a referendum on Obama.
Obama Dismisses Latin American Leaders’ Calls for Drug Legalization in Colombia |
| By: Jon Walker Monday April 16, 2012 12:00 pm |
With the total failure of the drug war causing many Latin American political leaders to publicly question the wisdom of prohibition, President Obama was forced to repeatedly address the issue this weekend at the Summit of the Americas in Cartagena, Colombia. Unfortunately, Obama did his best to quickly dismiss the topic with incoherent excuses.
Late Night FDL: Bad Policies Make Bad Politics |
| By: cocktailhag Sunday April 15, 2012 8:00 pm |
Conservatives, as a rule, are gullible nitwits who will happily make voting decisions against all available evidence; liberals, not so much. As proud members of the reality-based community, we tend to vote based on, well, what actually happened.
A Pathetic Moment for Obama to Show Executive Restraint |
| By: Jon Walker Thursday April 12, 2012 10:37 am |
I hope the LGBT community and the broad progressive community appreciate the full irony of this decision. Obama officially thinks it is appropriate to use his executive power to buy a drone from a government contractor and use that drone to execute you without trial, but he won’t use his executive power to tell that same contractor they can’t fire you for being gay.
Obama, the Buffett Rule and Its Chance of Ever Happening |
| By: Jon Walker Tuesday April 10, 2012 7:15 pm |
President Obama has been hammering the so called “Buffett Rule” as a key part of his 2012 campaign and an important way to distinguish himself from Republicans on issues of economic justice and deficit reduction. Obama was in Florida today pushing the Buffett Rule, while his administration released a new report on it. But it wasn’t a priority when the Democrats controlled Congress, and the chances they’ll control it next year are slim.
What Does Obama Hope to Accomplish With Another Four Years? |
| By: Jon Walker Monday April 9, 2012 11:00 am |
Reading all the issue sections at the Obama campaign website, they are almost exclusively about what the President has done. Besides the Buffet Rule, there is almost no talk about what Obama would do if we give him another four years or why he needs another term. I’m almost at a complete loss to think of anything bold and new that the Democrats say they hope to implement, other than keep the crazy GOP from willing. Is that enough to win?
