The DCCC’s Ad Team Plays Medicare for Laughs

By: David Dayen Tuesday April 19, 2011 3:08 pm

Why would you play this funny? Why give the message that old people are worthy of derision, essentially because they’re old? This looks like a really bad Super Bowl spot when the issue discussed is deadly serious. Republicans are claiming that the ad represents “scare tactics” but no, I could show you scare tactics. A closeup of a senior’s hand as she struggles in the last throes of life and then pulling out to reveal she’s laying on the middle of the sidewalk as white men in suits ignore her, that’s scare tactics. This looks like a GoDaddy ad.

Walker Signs Anti-Union Bill in Wisconsin; Dems Begin Advertising Against GOP Legislators

By: David Dayen Friday March 11, 2011 12:20 pm

If the legislative battle has ended, the legal and electoral battles are just beginning. And on the electoral front, Democrats have released two ads today that highlight Walker’s assault on workers’ rights.

Wisconsin Update: Thousands Rally Again as Talks Between Parties Stall

By: David Dayen Saturday March 5, 2011 6:00 pm

Another large rally took place in Madison, Wisconsin today, as filmmaker Michael Moore and Rep. Tammy Baldwin (D-WI) spoke to a crowd estimated at around 12,000 by Capitol police. Other estimates were higher, and in addition to the throng outside, close to 8,000 protesters gathered inside the Capitol today.

Pete Peterson’s Purchase of Cat Food Commission, Media Pays Off

By: David Dayen Thursday November 11, 2010 6:00 pm

I wanted to highlight something about the Cat Food Commission to permanently shrink government, something we’ve all known about, but which hasn’t been laid out in specific detail in a while. This Presidential commission has been borrowing paid staffers from groups that are ideologically committed to destroying the social safety net in America. This hasn’t been well-reported in the traditional media until today.

AK Sen: Operation Chaos Produces Hundreds of Write-In Candidates

By: David Dayen Saturday October 30, 2010 10:00 am

The last week of the Senate race in Alaska has been pretty chaotic. The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee is reportedly going up with last-minute ads, sensing an opportunity. It’s going to be a wild finish.

Democrats and Allies Continue to Make Social Security a Campaign Issue

By: David Dayen Tuesday October 26, 2010 12:44 pm

The Alliance for Retired Americans have placed ads in six key districts across the country, attacking what they describe as Republican plans to raise the retirement age for Social Security benefits. There’s a residual benefit to this as well – it’s a warning shot against Democrats who would like to do the same.

ConservaDems Run Ads Trashing Pelosi

By: David Dayen Wednesday October 13, 2010 6:30 pm

I hopped on a conference call with Nancy Pelosi a little late today, and didn’t find much to report. She was focused on the election and the choice voters have to face, and didn’t want to hear much about dissension within the Democratic ranks. Someone asked a question about members running away from the health care bill, and she insisted that “the plural of anecdote is not data,” that “at least 200 members are out there boasting the HC bill,” and that everybody is running their own race in their own district, and some issues work in those districts better than others.

But I have to think Pelosi is none too happy about Democratic candidates, receiving money from Democratic campaign sources, touting their intentions to vote against her for Speaker.

Spineless Anonymous Democrats Carp About White House Attacks on Chamber of Commerce

By: David Dayen Tuesday October 12, 2010 7:01 am

It’s incredible that anyone would call the charges about the Chamber “baseless.” The Chamber solicits donations from abroad. That money goes into an account. The Chamber then spends $75 million dollars from that same account. They say that the money is segregated but refuse to show any documentation backing that up. Nobody disputes any of this. Why is it at all out of bounds to point it out?

PA-Sen: Joe Sestak Goes for the Jugular Against Pat Toomey

By: David Dayen Saturday October 9, 2010 6:45 pm

Pennsylvania is one of those states in the industrial Midwest where the public mood is incredibly inhospitable to Democrats. At the same time, the Democratic enclaves around Philadelphia and its suburbs could boost statewide candidates if they manage to hold serve elsewhere. The Senate race is intriguing for how Joe Sestak is running against Pat Toomey – painting him as too extreme for the state and comparing him to the likes of the state’s former conservative Senator, Rick Santorum.

KY-Sen: Rand Paul’s Medicare Deductible Problem

By: David Dayen Thursday October 7, 2010 6:30 pm

If a candidate other than Rand Paul were nominated in Kentucky, given the rightward tilt of the state and the current electoral environment, they would have probably sailed to victory. But Paul’s past statements are really catching up with him and giving Jack Conway an angle to win.
