Why the U.S. Plan for Iraq is Doomed to Fail

By: Monday December 15, 2014 9:00 am

If the United States was looking for the surest way to lose Iraq War 3.0, it might start by retraining the failed Iraqi Army to send — alongside ruthless Shi’ite militias — into Sunni-majority territory and hope that the Sunnis will welcome them with open arms, throwing out the evil Islamic State. Maybe it’s time [...]

The Dumbest Article You’ll Read This Week About Iraq

By: Thursday October 31, 2013 1:05 pm

Iraq’s Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki is in the US this week, meeting with officials in hopes of getting more US assistance, including lots of weapons he says he needs to fight terrorism, or Syria, or whatever (whatever=killing more Sunnis.) You can expect lots of dumb, uninformed comment about this visit.

CUNY Union Condemns Police Repression at Petraeus Protests, CUNY Responds

By: Saturday September 21, 2013 12:45 pm

Just a few days after a video first posted on “The Dissenter” went viral — depicting a demobilized student sitting face-down on the ground being punched in the kidney by a plain-clothed New York Police Department (NYPD) officer — City University of New York (CUNY)’s faculty and staff union voted “yes” unanimously on a resolution condemning both the six arrests and accompanying police repression.

The students were protesting a fundraiser featuring CUNY Macaulay Honors College adjunct professor and former CIA Director David Petraeus.

Over Easy: (Black) Friday Free for All

By: Friday November 23, 2012 6:15 am

Thanksgiving this year fell on the 49th anniversary of JFK’s assassination. I was just 20, married only 9 months, and my husband and I spent the weekend glued to the TV in our tiny apartment, weeping. That and the September 11th attacks on the World Trade Center are my only two “never forget where I was when I heard” moments.

Late Night: Rhymes with “Betray Us,” But Pat Robertson Says It’s Okay! It’s Who You Know.

By: Tuesday November 13, 2012 8:00 pm

Just so you know, Pat Robertson says it’s okay that Petraeus banged Paula Broadwell because”she’s an extremely good-looking woman…The man’s off in a foreign land and he’s lonely and here’s a good-looking lady throwing herself at him. He’s a man.”

(But of course the four-star crossed lovers didn’t make the beast with two backs until after he joined the CIA. Because adultery in the military is a crime.)

PROPINQUITY! Your Pat Robertson word of the day.

Waiting for Superman (Who Is Not Mitt Romney)

By: Monday October 24, 2011 7:20 pm

Muslim-hating WaPo bigot-blogger Jennifer Rubin is again very displeased with President Obama, because he has the audacity to want to withdraw the troops from Iraq before we have had the opportunity to drain all the oil that lies beneath the sand and kill all the people who live above it. Will Petraeus save us?

Pentagon Assertions of “Progress” In Afghanistan Are a Bad Joke

By: Wednesday March 9, 2011 7:20 pm

The Pentagon wants you to ignore some inconvenient facts about the failure of the escalation strategy in Afghanistan.

The latest Petraeus/Gates media tour is under way in preparation for the general’s testimony to Congress next week, and they’re trotting out the same, tired spin they’ve been using since McChrystal was replaced in disgrace last year.

Failure, Not Progress, in Afghanistan

By: Wednesday December 15, 2010 6:40 pm

On Thursday, December 16, 2010, the White House will use its December review to try to spin the disastrous Afghanistan War plan by citing “progress” in the military campaign, but the available facts paint a picture of a war that’s not making us safer and that’s not worth the cost.

Afghanistan: No Withdrawal, No Reconciliation

By: Thursday November 18, 2010 6:40 pm

Obama said it wouldn’t be easy, and it wasn’t – a lot of American and Afghan blood was spilled in order to “break the momentum” and get a seat at the table. And it certainly wasn’t quick, these talks have been in the works for well over a year now. So, how did it go?

Mullah Omar, leader of the Taliban, isn’t having any of it…Damn, what’s the problem?
