Bennie Thompson to Peter King: What about the White Supremacists?

By: emptywheel Wednesday February 2, 2011 7:00 am

Ranking member of the House Homeland Security Committee, Bennie Thompson, just wrote a letter to Rep. Peter King asking him to include other terrorists, in addition to Islamic extremists, in his fear-mongering hearing this month.

Peter King’s “Danger from Within”

By: emptywheel Monday January 24, 2011 3:06 pm

This false claim that all the terrorists indicted in the last two years are allegedly motivated by Islamic extremism is not just sloppy. It serves to excuse one of the biggest problems of Rep. Peter King’s fear-mongering: the way it tautologically focuses on Islamic extremism and ignores other terrorists that pose an important threat to this country.

Boehner Shuts Down Peter King Gun Control Legislation

By: David Dayen Wednesday January 12, 2011 11:45 am

I don’t really care that Boehner won’t support the King bill, which I find pretty ridiculous. But if legislation that comes from the Republican side can’t even get past the introductory stage, I don’t see what hope there is for Democratic bills.

Peter King’s Outlandish Gun “Control” Proposal

By: David Dayen Tuesday January 11, 2011 1:25 pm

A more obvious conclusion is that Rep. Pete King (R-NY) isn’t all that serious about gun control at all; he wants to propose something with no chance of becoming law to counteract the legislation, from Carolyn McCarthy (who’s from his neighboring district on Long Island), that would ban high-capacity magazine clips. I suspect this has more to do with local New York politics than anyone thinks. And of course, “independent” Mike Bloomberg is giving King a high-profile assist.

Obama Fails to Restore Separation of Church and State

By: Jim White Friday January 7, 2011 8:45 am

Despite famously, spectacularly and cravenly throwing his long-time pastor under the bus during the 2008 Democratic primary, Barack Obama has failed to steer our country back to its founding principle of the strict separation between church and state. Because George W. Bush relied heavily on radical Christian fundamentalists to be elected, it was not surprising when he followed through on a campaign promise and established an office of faith-based initiatives. Obama, however, has continued the office, with only minor changes to the window dressing. Furthermore, despite public attention on The Family and its nefarious activities, Obama defied calls to stay away and still spoke last year to the National Prayer Breakfast, which is organized by the same group. Although the US is not yet to the point that politicians will be killed because they are viewed as likely to weaken a blasphemy law or there are mass killings based on religious differences, how far away are those days now that the military sees the need for extra “counseling” for soldiers who are atheists, when a House Committee Chair plans hearings on the “radicalization” of a faith he differs with, and some cadets at the Air Force Academy replied in a survey that they “felt in fear” since they were not Christian fundamentalists? Integration of radical Christian fundamentalist (or any other religion’s) views into the US government and military is a huge danger to our country and to the world, and yet Obama seems just as fearful of attacking this problem as he is in the other political battles in which he has capitulated.

Peter “Material Support for Terrorism” King

The correct response to King’s actions is undoubtedly to point to this rank hypocrisy.

Are You Now Or Have You Ever Been A Muslim In America?

By: Spencer Ackerman Friday December 17, 2010 3:20 pm

Rep. Peter King will hold hearings on “the radicalization” of American Muslims when he gets his gavel for the House’s homeland-security committee. Framing the question that way predetermines its outcome: millions of Americans will be presumptively guilty of drifting into fellow-traveling with al-Qaeda. But King is right that even a statistically miniscule rise in homegrown terrorism deserves thorough analysis. The question is how real King will allow his hearings to get.

House Committee on Homeland Security Expressed Concerns about “Gate Rape” on September 22

By: emptywheel Saturday November 20, 2010 5:08 am

Chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee Bennie Thompson sent Transportation Security Administration Director John Pistole a letter on Friday expressing concern that the TSA did not review privacy and civil liberty concerns before implementing the new “gate rape” procedures at airports. The letter demands additional information on the pat-downs and calls on Pistole to reconsider them.

Undocumented Students Not Being Deported: GOP Dream Issue, or Prelude to DREAM?

By: David Dayen Monday August 9, 2010 10:30 am

There have been a record amount of deportations under President Obama. Democrats across the board have sought to prove their “toughness” by taking it out on vulnerable members of society.

But that apparently has its limits. The President is not targeting undocumented students, an outcome which could lead to a more humane policy in this area.
