Liveblogging of the Senate Banking Committee hearing on foreclosure fraud continues. Senator Richard Shelby was actually pretty good, but then Sens. Mike Johanns and Bob Bennett went to some length to try to pretend the banksters weren’t doing what they were doing.

Liveblog: Senate Banking Committee Hearing on Foreclosure Fraud |
| By: David Dayen Tuesday November 16, 2010 12:35 pm |
This hearing is the latest example of national policymakers getting involved in the foreclosure fraud issue. The Congressional Oversight Panel warning of the enormous risk from the failures of servicers was the first report of its kind at the federal level to take full measure of the situation, and this is the first Congressional hearing. Senators on the Democratic side like Jeff Merkley and Sherrod Brown are sure to press the bank representatives aggressively on why foreclosure mitigation programs have failed, and why they used false documents to evict people from their homes. The ranking member on the Republican side, Richard Shelby, wants to investigate failures at the major loan servicers.
TSA May Prosecute “Don’t Touch My Junk” Guy |
| By: Michael Whitney Tuesday November 16, 2010 9:35 am |
You’ve probably heard of the “Don’t Touch My Junk” guy who chose to miss his flight rather than have TSA touch his genitals in its brand new “aggressive pat-downs” strategy. As if the experience wasn’t humiliating enough – and expensive, for missing his flight – the TSA has decided to make an example of John “Don’t Touch My Junk” Tyner. The TSA announced yesterday it would investigate, and may prosecute, Tyner for declining the porno scanners and groping.
Gropey Joe: Lieberman “Comes Down on the Side of Pat-Downs” before TSA Hearing (VIDEO) |
| By: Ryan Cook Tuesday November 16, 2010 7:45 am |
Joe Lieberman’s Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs will hold a hearing today at 3:15pm EST to discuss “Closing the Gaps In Air Cargo Security” with TSA Director John Pistole. Lieberman got a head start on the issue, of course. He was on MSNBC yesterday in an interview with Andrea Mitchell, who brought up conversing about full body scanners and security “pat downs.” When asked whether or not he believed that the procedures are invasive, he responded, “I come down on the side of pat downs.”

If the Democratic Party wants to survive the next two years, it needs to find a new baby-sitter for Darrell Issa.

So the Republicans run and win a campaign in a treacherous economic environment, when people are desperate for something tangible to improve their situation in life. And the Republicans will start that new era by putting science on trial.
The Compromise Intelligence Authorization: More Oversight, More Responsibility |
| By: emptywheel Wednesday September 29, 2010 1:25 pm |
It remains to be seen whether this compromise will give Congress enough new oversight powers to prevent the abuses that happened under Bush (and heck–I assume the Gang of Four, if not the Gang of Eight–has signed off on assassinating US citizens solely on the President’s say so, so it’s not clear that oversight will be any use in protecting the Constitution). But Jeff Stein reports both Pelosi and DiFi declaring victory, while the White House and DOD remain silent.
Pelosi Gets Additional Intelligence Oversight for Congress |
| By: David Dayen Tuesday September 28, 2010 5:20 pm |
It’s worth noting that if Nancy Pelosi does happen to lose the Speaker’s gavel after November, one of her final acts was to at least achieve some more accountability on the executive branch as it relates to intelligence oversight.
Tony Hayward to Get His Life Back |
| By: Scarecrow Friday June 18, 2010 11:31 am |
After Tony’s abysmal performance yesterday before the House Subcommittee on investigations, is anyone surprised that BP’s Chairman just announced Tony “I want my life back” Hayward may get his wish?
With Evidence of Criminality Mounting, Will Any BP Officers Face Indictment? |
| By: masaccio Thursday June 17, 2010 12:05 pm |
The drumbeat has already started: We can’t afford to indict BP because it would cause a lot of harm to employees and shareholders. The Obama Administration has demonstrated its acceptance of this mindless mantra, and we shouldn’t hope to win real sanctions against this rapacious company. But what are the consequences for the employees of BP who created the mess? “The New York Times” reports that criminal indictments aren’t likely against employees, except at very low levels. That seems odd.
