President Obama’s Climate Action Plan: Not Even Close

By: Monday August 12, 2013 7:15 pm

In June, after more than five years as president, President Obama finally proposed a climate action plan for America. True to form, the president gave an eloquent speech, with strong words for those still in denial about the severity of the crisis we face: “We don’t have time for a meeting of the Flat Earth Society.”

Unfortunately for all of us, the blueprint he presented is more PR than plan.

Shell Drill Rig Kulluk Heavily Damaged – To Be Put on Oceangoing Drydock and Moved to Asia

By: Monday January 28, 2013 3:39 pm

I have now received word from two anonymous sources on Kodiak Island that it appears damage assessment of the Shell Oil drill rig Kulluk is far worse than has been thus far disclosed by the Unified Command: Severe hull damage, making it unsafe to tow it to Puget Sound. Severe power plant damage from saltwater contamination. Severe damage to wiring, ventilation and other internal control systems.

Supposedly, a very large, oceangoing dry dock will be underway soon to Kodiak from Asia, and the rig will then be brought to Asia, most likely Korea, where it has been worked on before.

Obama Announces Expedited Review for Southern Half of Keystone XL Pipeline

By: Thursday March 22, 2012 1:45 pm

The President held his event in Cushing, Oklahoma this morning announcing an expedited review of the southern half of the Keystone XL pipeline, which will move oil from Cushing to refineries at Port Arthur, Texas (in all likelihood raising gas prices in parts of the Midwest). And as Oklahomans listened and Native American protesters demonstrated in an actual cage, the President bragged about things that I would argue should not be the stuff of bragging.

BP – and Gulf Drilling – Poised for Comeback After Settlement on Oil Spill Claims

By: Monday March 5, 2012 9:28 am

BP settled with 120,000 victims of the oil disaster in the Gulf coast for a sum of $7.8 billion, all of which will come from the already allocated $20 billion oil spill fund. This result works well for BP, which can now get back to the business of exploiting world resources for profit. Meanwhile, after the moratorium there’s now a resurgence in offshore drilling worldwide; in the Gulf, it’s about to surpass pre-disaster levels.

President Mostly Speaks Truth About Gas Prices

By: Friday February 24, 2012 9:15 am

So we’re going to have another fatuous debate about gas prices in this country, as if the President has a ticker on his desk that he can set to the 9/10 of a cent. President Obama made the effort to mock this. As a national politician he obviously feels he cannot say “there’s not much I can do,” but he came extremely close in this speech.

Obama Opens Part of National Petroleum Reserve in Alaska to Leases for Drilling

By: Saturday May 14, 2011 11:11 am

President Obama announced in his weekly address a plan to open part of the National Petroleum Reserve in Alaska to oil drilling. Through an executive order, the President would also extend leases in the Gulf of Mexico for oil concerns that were subject to the moratorium on deepwater drilling after the BP oil disaster, as well as speeding up evaluation of resources in the Atlantic, extending other leases in Alaska and building incentives for oil and gas companies to use land they own on existing leases on land and sea.

Democrats Unleash Plan to Cancel Big Oil Tax Subsidies

By: Tuesday May 10, 2011 3:53 pm

Democrats unveiled their legislation to repeal Big Oil tax subsidies today, giving the high-profile legislation to three Senators with elections next year in tough states (Claire McCaskill, Sherrod Brown and Jon Tester) along with Bob Menendez, who appears to be the point person on oil-related issues in the caucus. Given that he was so successful in getting the oil spill liability cap lifted- oh wait, he didn’t, and I suspect that this legislation will end up somewhere on the same shelf with that one.

Obama Energy Security Plan Launches Like Lead Balloon

By: Wednesday March 30, 2011 3:43 pm

Let’s just say that the President’s energy security speech didn’t go over so well among the communities of interest.

US Approves First Gulf Deepwater Well – And BP Is Majority Owner

By: Tuesday March 1, 2011 3:35 pm

The Obama Administration approved the first deepwater drilling well permit for the Gulf of Mexico, 11 months after the BP oil disaster. . . .
