The good news is the Obama administration has actually done the right thing by allowing Plan B, the emergency planblogocontraception, to be sold over the counter. Of course the administration only did this after first taking the almost unprecedented step of overruling the FDA’s recommendations and then losing multiple court cases fighting this policy. Eight former Drug Enforcement Administration directors sent a letter asking the Obama administration to nullify the marijuana legalization laws voters recently approved in Washington State and Colorado. Not surprisingly, a bunch of people who have made very successful careers around fighting the drug war want to make sure the drug war continues.

Apparently the White House is back handing out extremely bad political advice to Congressional Democrats to get their support for a big partisan austerity package that includes Medicare and Social Security benefits cuts.

Regardless of how you feel about the quality of Massachusetts health care reform, then-Gov. Mitt Romney’s role in its passage was a perfect example of the bipartisan compromise ideal that President Obama claims to love so strongly. Yet Obama is now actively trying to punish Romney for taking part in the bipartisanship Obama thinks is lacking.

This won’t just be a public relations nightmare, but on every imaginable policy level, including environmental, health, government spending, national security, and civil liberties, this is a really terrible idea. I can only hope this is a trial balloon I can soon pop.
