FDL Book Salon Welcomes Will Bunch, October 1, 2011: The Battle of the Brooklyn Bridge

By: Lindsay Beyerstein Thursday October 27, 2011 11:29 am

Bunch tells the story of the bridge through the eyes of several vividly drawn characters: A 19-year-old veteran street protester with working class roots and a genius for escaping arrest; a 69-year-old retired lawyer who showed up on impulse after being moved by a play about the final day of Martin Luther King’s life; a painfully shy theater tech who found the movement online; a self-styled branding expert/saxophonist; and a 24-year-old Jewish immigrant from the former Soviet Union, drowning in student debt.

By: Kevin Gosztola Friday October 21, 2011 12:59 pm

An unusually dynamic and lively Manhattan Community Board 1 Meeting took place blocks away from Liberty Park yesterday. The Quality of Life/Financial District Committee met to deliberate over Occupy Wall Street and hear remarks from residents. The board members, which have been in support of Occupy Wall Street, have been receiving an increasing amount of complaints about the occupation.

The Party Line: Will Occupy Wall Street Affect New York Politics?

By: Gregg Levine Saturday October 15, 2011 1:00 pm

As I walked down to Zuccotti Park/Liberty Square in the predawn hours of October 14, I could hear “the people’s mic” and the people’s resounding cheers over three blocks away. . . but the biggest cheer came soon after I wedged my way into the park. . . .

Why I’m Marching in SlutWalk NYC

By: RHRealityCheck Thursday September 29, 2011 6:10 pm

One night in January after a lot of dancing at a friend’s house party in Brooklyn, a male neighbor and I made our way back to our building less than a mile away. We’d both consumed alcoholic beverages but nothing unusual for twenty-somethings on a Saturday night. My roommate had a new love interest at home with him, so to give him some privacy I went back to the neighbor’s apartment to crash, which I’d done several times before. I felt safe going back there as I’d spent a lot of time with this neighbor in a Will & Grace, Glee-watching, Katy Perry-listening kind of way.

FDL Book Salon Welcomes David Evanier, All the Things You Are: The Life of Tony Bennett

By: Eric Comstock Sunday September 4, 2011 1:59 pm

It’s never “happily ever after” for a superstar who cares about his work and respects his audience as much as Tony Bennett does. David Evanier has peeled the onion to reveal the sometimes-charming, often-raffish world of New York showbiz, and the competitive treadmill of recording for Columbia Records, people who always gravitate toward the quick buck rather than the distinguished catalog. That Tony has succeeded, and has had the best period of his career while in his 70s and 80s, is both a miracle and a great story, which David tells wonderfully.

Bipartisan Bill Introduced in NY to Reduce “Public View” Marijuana Penalties

By: Jon Walker Monday May 16, 2011 7:15 pm

The move is in response to increasing media scrutiny over the horrific way New York City has been enforcing “public possession” marijuana laws. The enforcement has been extremely racially biased, with almost all those arrest being black or Latino. Even worse, reporting by WNYC showed how the NYPD has been tricking people into showing their marijuana, violating people’s civil rights with illegal searches, and lying in official reports to claim the marijuana they found hidden on a person was in “public view,” so it would carry a higher penalty.

Video: NYC Mayor Bloomberg Booed, Heckled at Triangle Fire Commemoration

By: Gregg Levine Saturday March 26, 2011 8:12 am

As I stood witness to the Triangle Shirtwaist fire centennial commemoration at the corner of Washington Place and Green Street on Friday, March 25, I was surprised and impressed by the size of the crowd, but the most unexpected moment of the day came when New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg stepped to the microphone.
