The truth does not lie somewhere between Fox News and MSNBC, it lies outside of the matrix of establishment tribal power plays posing as battles of ideas and can only be gleaned from hearing voices outside the orthodoxy. This is why having independent voices like Firedoglake (and others) is so important. Not because we have a monopoly on truth, but because hearing independent voices helps you see the full picture and find the truth for yourself.

Noam Chomsky: The Most Dangerous Moment

By: Monday March 24, 2014 7:15 pm

The world stood still 50 years ago during the last week of October, from the moment when it learned that the Soviet Union had placed nuclear-armed missiles in Cuba until the crisis was officially ended — though unknown to the public, only officially.

The image of the world standing still is the turn of phrase of Sheldon Stern, former historian at the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library, who published the authoritative version of the tapes of the ExComm meetings where Kennedy and a close circle of advisers debated how to respond to the crisis. Those meetings were secretly recorded by the president, which might bear on the fact that his stand throughout the recorded sessions is relatively temperate compared to other participants, who were unaware that they were speaking to history.

Her getting a pistol permit reminds me that some people hated her. Did they hate her for her ideas or just because she was a woman?

Israeli air strikes have brought the death toll in Gaza to at least 100 people killed. Hundreds have been injured. Israeli forces have launched over 950 air strikes while Palestinian militants have fired over 1,000 projectiles causing minor wounds to multiple Israelis. A rocket killed three Israelis on Thursday, but at least a third of the projectiles have been intercepted by Israel’s Iron Dome defense system, which the United States helped fund through hundreds of millions of dollars in military aid.
