In almost every new national poll Rick Santorum performs just about as well as Mitt Romney in a hypothetical general election match up against President Obama. The new national polls out today from AP/GfK and Qunnipiac both have Romney performing only a single point better than Santorum in the general election.

Billionaire Sheldon Adelson, who has already injected over $10 million into helping Newt Gingrich become President, told Forbes that he could easily spend $100 million this year on influencing politics. Having elections heavily impacted by the whims of a few billionaires is a horrible way to run a democracy. Even the billionaires currently exploiting it admit it is a horrible system, but that hasn’t stopped them from choosing to exploit it.

Since Rick Santorum’s triple win last week the state of the Republican primary has changed dramatically. In the past 24 hours four major national polls have found Rick Santorum slightly leading or effectively tied with Mitt Romney. In addition the polls found Newt Gingrich’s support has falling significantly since his January peak.

The good news for Rick Santorum keeps on coming. Santorum now has surged to a modest two point lead over Mitt Romney in Pew Research national Republican primary polling. The poll was conducted from February 8-12 directly after Santorum’s three big wins last Tuesday.

Last night Rick Santorum wildly beat expectations by pulling off the triple play, three wins in three contests. Santorum won the caucuses in both Minnesota and Colorado. He also scored a huge victory in the non-binding Missouri primary. Romney and Gingrich both did poorly, making the first seem vulnerable and the second less credible as the anit-Romney alternative.
