Come Saturday Morning: Newt, Mitch, and the Veterans Administration

By: Saturday May 17, 2014 6:45 am

If there’s one thing the Republicans are good at, it’s creating a big mess and dodging the blame for it.

Now is the Time for All Good DC Hookers to Come to the Aid of Their Country

Many of you folk might remember when Larry Flynt, sickened by the grotesque hypocrisy of the Capitol Hill Republicans attacking Bill Clinton over his private life, offered to pay $1 million to any person or persons who could provide him with iron-clad evidence of congressional or senatorial hanky-panky by any of the elected officials currently castigating President Clinton. His efforts led to the downfall of both Newt Gingrich and alleged BDSM aficionado Bob Livingston, and very nearly derailed the impeachment juggernaut.

A Fool and His Money

By: Thursday December 13, 2012 8:00 pm

One of the deepest divides in our alarmingly escalating Class War is one of mutual misunderstanding between the two sides about what money is for: The Job Creators can’t comprehend why the Lower Orders should have such fripperies as food, housing, and medical care (or worse, cell phones and TV’s), while those being steadily ground into mush under their well-shod heels can’t understand why people with enough money to buy their own states don’t at least buy states where the weather is better.

Hunger Games

The increasingly surreal reality show that is the Republican Convention is rapidly shaping up to be one of the most offensive displays of mendacity, racism, and bloodlust the Republicans have yet performed, as evidenced in the “color” stories coming out of it. From a black CNN camera operator pelted with nuts by some slack-jawed cracker slurring, “this is how we feed animals,” and a Puerto Rican billionairess speaker shouted down by the mob chanting, “USA,” Ann Romney waxing lyrical about her “real” marriage, to a bloated and surly Chris Christie bragging about union-busting in his laughable fake Sopranos style, the whole undeniably engrossing spectacle, harried by a hurricane, is just a few midgets shy of a Fellini movie.

FDL Book Salon Welcomes Doug Saunders, The Myth of the Muslim Tide

By: Sunday August 26, 2012 1:59 pm

Doug Saunders is a journalist of the rare kind these days. He actually researches, explores, investigates and only then reports on the major trends of our global community. His earlier book, Arrival City, explored “the final shift of human populations from agricultural life to cities… —from Maryland to Shenzhen, from the favelas of Rio to the shanty towns of Mumbai, from Los Angeles to Nairobi. “ His new book The Myth of the Muslim Tide addresses the fearful response of so many Americans and Europeans to one key constituency of that shift, Muslim immigrants.

Republican Party’s Embrace of Privatizing Medicare via Vouchers is Now Complete

By: Wednesday August 22, 2012 10:20 am

It has been a long road, but the Republican Party’s embrace of the idea of privatizing Medicare via a voucher system is now complete. The GOP will add Paul Ryan’s plan to turn Medicare into a voucher program to their official party platform, based on a draft version likely to be ratified.

More on the Irrelevant Welfare Debate in the Presidential Campaign

By: Thursday August 9, 2012 12:10 pm

This welfare dustup in the Presidential election, as I said earlier in the week, generates a lot of heat as an argument while being irrelevant to the actual issue. Newt Gingrich, the architect of welfare reform in the 1990s who has been employed by the Romney campaign as a spokesman, admitted last night that there’s no proof that the waivers provided by the Department of Health and Human Services would lead to direct cash payments to beneficiaries, which it wouldn’t.

Come Saturday Morning: Has Casino Magnate Sheldon Adelson Found a Scandal He Can’t Dodge?

By: Saturday June 30, 2012 6:45 am

Has Sheldon “Thug Life” Adelson finally found himself in a situation he can’t bully or buy his way out of? Time will tell.

Newt Thanks Supporters as He Exits GOP Clown Car

By: Wednesday May 2, 2012 9:30 am

We pause a moment to commemorate Newt Gingrich suspending his book tour — uh, his campaign to become President. To a discerning public, he revealed the nature of Mitt Romney’s vulture capitalism, exposed its racism and anti-immigrant hatreds, and personified everything that went wrong with his party. We are grateful for such comings and goings.
