Unlike many, Rush Limbaugh found Pope Francis’ rebuke to neoliberalism entirely out of step with Christian values. In fact, Limbaugh claimed it was “pure Marxism coming out of the mouth of the pope.” Which is stunning on a number of levels.

Opus Dei, call your office. Pope Francis, in his first major writing since taking office, has issued a rigorous and comprehensive denunciation of Neoliberalism. Called his Apostolic Exhortation, the writing makes clear that Pope Francis regards modern capitalism and the political movement promoting it to be antithetical to the teachings of Jesus.

It would be easy to finance a big increase in Social Security by applying FICA taxes to income over $750K for Human Persons, and $10 million for Corporate Persons, Endowments, Trusts and other forms of hiding wealth.

It is now well understood that Neoliberals are not advocates of a small or stunted night watchman state. They regularly demean the state to outsiders, but that does not imply they prefer a weak state. Rather, all their political efforts are devoted to recasting the strong state as one that conforms to their doctrinal imperatives.

Tyler Cowan has an interesting think piece in Politico Magazine. Cowan is an economist at George Mason, with a side gig as general director of the Mercatus Center. That puts him at the heart of the neoliberal thought collective described by Philip Mirowski in his book, Never Let a Serious Crisis Go to Waste. Cowan begins with a discussion of a dystopian science fiction story by Isaac Asimov, in which computers and robots have taken over, reducing humans to nothing but consumers and happy idiots.

As information leaks about secret provisions of the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), opposition to the sovereignty-killing trade agreement is building in Congress. More than 150 House Democrats have publicly stated they oppose giving President Obama fast-track trade authority for TPP. It appears some in Congress have learned their lesson from NAFTA and the WTO – that “free trade” is a scam that destroys economies and turns all power over to transnational corporations who don’t give a damn about the host countries.

Mike Konczal discussed the Obamacare computer system problems raising the question of its implications for liberal versus neoliberal approaches to problem solving. Ross Douthat also deals with this issue. Douthat thinks conservatism is not the same as neoliberalism, but he seems to agree with Konczal’s definition of the latter. I think both are discussing only one small part of the neoliberal project.

Why don’t we just admit that Grover Norquist’s work here in these United States is, well, done? Yes, the federal government is technically back in business, but only just in time to let Foster Farms continue selling salmonella-tainted chicken, JPMorgan Chase escape its latest fraud with a laughably small fine, and Sinclair Broadcast Group snap up a dozen or so more local television stations. And that’s just this week.
