The truth does not lie somewhere between Fox News and MSNBC, it lies outside of the matrix of establishment tribal power plays posing as battles of ideas and can only be gleaned from hearing voices outside the orthodoxy. This is why having independent voices like Firedoglake (and others) is so important. Not because we have a monopoly on truth, but because hearing independent voices helps you see the full picture and find the truth for yourself.

Looking for Firedoglake

By: Thursday October 23, 2014 1:19 pm

Firedoglake and I spent several years looking for each other.

In my final months at the State Department, just before getting pushed out because of my whistleblowing, Firedoglake was one of the web sites firewalled from our desktop computers because of its Wikileaks content. Despite sites like FDL being available everywhere (it is called the world wide web after all), State pretended the Chelsea Manning-disclosed material was still protected and thus while I could see it on my government classified computer without turning into a pumpkin, I could not view it on sites like FDL. Odd.

I was looking for Firedoglake without knowing it. I do not get paid for my work here, just as you do not pay to read the site. But if we both want this resource to keep on going, we need to step up. I’ll keep on writing at no cost to FDL. Won’t you consider a small donation to keep us online? This stuff really matters, never more than now.

MSM’s “Inevitable War Theory” Destroyed. Most Important Event Ever

By: Sunday September 29, 2013 4:00 pm

What has just occurred on Syria, the aversion of another mainstream media (MSM) “Inevitable War”, despite the absolute, uniform certitude of the MSM that it must and will occur…..yada yada yada, is such a rare thing. It was so important that the American people, along with the Brits and the World, have uniformly, and with certitude, absolutely rejected that MSM’s advocacy for more war.

FDL Book Salon Welcomes Rory O’Connor, Friends, Followers and the Future: How Social Media are Changing Politics, Threatening Big Brands, and Killing Traditional Media

By: Sunday August 5, 2012 1:59 pm

When I sat down to read Friends, Followers and the Future by Rory O’Connor, I thought I knew what to expect. This is how I earn my living- by advising others on how best to integrate social media into their lives and work. The world that is social media is at best a microcosm of the world at large and at worst a poor substitute for the offline world, and I figured that it would be easy to read this book, digest it into manageable pieces and write this intro for today’s book salon.

I was wrong.

FDL Book Salon Welcomes Tom Engelhardt, The United States of Fear

By: Saturday January 14, 2012 1:59 pm

Everything changed on September 11, 2001. It’s become an American truism. And for many, it’s also absolutely true. It certainly was the case for Tom Engelhardt. He was roughly seven miles north of the World Trade Center that morning and that’s about the furthest he’s been from it since.

Thomas Friedman, Bard of the 1 Percent, Reports on the Problem of Incompetent CEOs

By: Sunday October 16, 2011 9:30 am

After referring to David Brooks as the “Bard of the 1 Percent,” I was assaulted with a barrage of threatening letters and phone calls from representatives of Thomas Friedman who insisted that he holds this title. I will let the two NYT columnists slug it out between themselves and deal with the substance.

Firedoglake Beats Mainstream Media to Likely Cause of Oil Spill — by a Week

By: Saturday May 8, 2010 12:00 pm

Less than 72 hours after the BP oil spill began, Firedoglake had discerned, and blogged about, the likely cause of the catastrophe, that heat from the curing concrete had thawed methane trapped in the ocean floor beneath deep waters, and that methane had exploded.

Today, mainstream media thinks this is a front page story; so did we, a week ago.
