Legal Group Launches to Aggressively Challenge US Government Prosecutions of Whistleblowers

A legal group of criminal defense attorneys has formed to combat what they describe as the FBI and Justice Department’s use of harassment and over-prosecution to chill and silence those who engage in journalism, Internet activism or dissent.

The group, the Whistleblower Defense League, will defend individuals engaged in investigating the United States government and those who are “in positions to reveal truths about this government and its relationships with other governments and corporations.”

According to a report by Citizen Lab the intrusive and surveillance software FinSpy sold to governments to spy on their citizens has been found in 25 countries. The investigation was launched based on analysis of a suspicious email that was targeting Bahraini activists.

The Justice Department indicted Matthew Keys, the deputy social media editor for, for conspiring with members of Anonymous and giving them login information so they could “hack into and alter” the Los Angeles Times‘ website.

The indictment should raise suspicion, however, because Hector Xavier Monsegur or ”Sabu,” who the FBI flipped and used to catch and, to some extent, entrap LulzSec hackers, is likely involved in the indictment.
