Starting today in Maryland, the penalty for getting caught with a small amount of marijuana will be a small fine instead of possible jail time. Back in April Gov. Martin O’Malley (D) signed into law SB 364, but the law didn’t take effect until today, October 1st. This makes Maryland the 17th state plus D.C. where marijuana is decriminalized.

Last week in Washington DC, Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley’s political dark money group met with corporate funders at the DC headquarters of the American Natural Gas Alliance (ANGA). ANGA is the lead lobby group for the fracking and shale industry, with a budget of $69 million in 2012. O’Malley’s group is called newDEAL, which describes itself as a “national network searching the country for state and local elected leaders who are pro-growth progressives to help them share their innovative ideas.”

It is time to take a moment to again reflect on just how much progress has been made on the issue of marriage equality in the last decade.
Back during the 2008 Democratic primary none of the strongest candidates supported same-sex marriage. Now with the recent endorsement of Hillary Clinton, every Democrat that is viewed as a possible top tier candidate in the 2016 Presidential primary has come out in favor of marriage equality.

The National Governors Association meeting came and went this weekend without any definitive answers on Medicaid expansion – from both sides of the political divide. Republicans continue to be either adamantly opposed to expanding Medicaid for their populations or undecided about the matter.
