Each week when I sit down to write a post, I wrack my brain to think of something positive, or at least relatively so, to write about, and each week events prevent this from happening. It’s hard not to feel typecast when even the most complimentary commenters nonetheless refer to one’s work as a “rant” or admit that I’ve made them more depressed, angry, hopeless, or whatever.
For that reason, I am happy to announce that for the first time in recent memory the week’s news, taken together, makes me feel uncharacteristically optimistic.

A set of dueling announcements has kicked off what should be one of the most interesting and heavily contested primaries of 2014. Late Tuesday Senator Mike Enzi (R-Wyoming) announced that he was planning to run for a fourth senate term. Almost immediately afterwards Liz Cheney, the daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney, announced she would be challenging him in the Republican primary.

Ray Kelly’s NYPD has treated the Occupy Wall Street protests in a manner glaringly different from how they treated a protest organized by Liz Cheney. Liz Cheney’s protest against holding terror trials in NYC was greeted with open arms, but Occupy Wall Street has been walled off and maced.

It seems that the problem is not just that the government tortured Ahmed Ghailani and now want to use his testimony under torture to help convict him, but that they may have continued to coerce witnesses — in unknown ways — to get a conviction for Ghailani.

Two-thirds of Democrats in polls are ready to end the Afghan war, most of them strongly. Is the institutional Democratic Party trying to score political points on an issue that a solid majority of their party opposes?

Acting Office of Legal Counsel head David Barron is returning to spend more time with his law students at Harvard, to be replaced by Jonathan Cedarbaum. Unlike several of the legal jobs that have turned over under this Administration, this one doesn’t appear to be tied to a fight over counter-terrorism policy.

So now PapaDick’s evil spawn demands that the President of this country ignore the illegal killing of an American in service to her small-minded McCarthyite attacks?
