Mittens Adds Out Gay Man as National Security and Foreign Policy Spokesman

By: Pam Spaulding Friday April 20, 2012 7:12 am

I guess this is Mitt Romney’s attempt to throw a bone to gay Republicans, who haven’t had much to celebrate with the GOPClownCar being steered all primary season long by candidates more than willing to gay-bait and gay-bash. This move by Mittens will, no doubt, cause an eruption in the Santorum wing of the party, which is already suspicious about the social conservative creds of the former Massachusetts governor and presumptive GOP presidential nominee.

WH Press Secretary Bellyflops When Questioned About Thumbs Down on ENDA Exec Order

By: Pam Spaulding Friday April 13, 2012 1:03 pm

I haven’t seen such complete #FAIL at the podium for the White House Press Secretary since Robert Gibbs was up there bobbing and weaving over “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell” questions from Kerry Eleveld, formerly of The Advocate. Now it was Jay Carney’s turn to look like a jack@ss trying to explain why the President refused to sign an executive order that would bar workplace discrimination by federal contractors — protecting LGBT workers who are now able to be fired simply because of their sexual orientation, gender identity or expression.

A Pathetic Moment for Obama to Show Executive Restraint

By: Jon Walker Thursday April 12, 2012 10:37 am

I hope the LGBT community and the broad progressive community appreciate the full irony of this decision. Obama officially thinks it is appropriate to use his executive power to buy a drone from a government contractor and use that drone to execute you without trial, but he won’t use his executive power to tell that same contractor they can’t fire you for being gay.

Easter Eve Hypocrisy from the Catholic Bishops

By: Peterr Saturday April 7, 2012 9:04 am

On the Eve of Easter, the purity patrol of the Roman Catholic church is roaring along. Vicki Kennedy (Ted’s widow) had her invitation to speak at a Catholic commencement yanked, and Compañeros, an immigrant services group in Colorado, had their funding pulled because they are affiliated with a larger immigrant rights organization that includes LGBTs. Lovely.

It’s especially lovely, considering that the US Conference of Catholic Bishops themselves recently submitted a brief to the US Supreme Court, co-signed by an organization that ordains women, LGBTs, and married people, that supports marriage equality, and that views women as capable of making their own decisions with regard to abortion. (That would be my own denomination, the ELCA.)

Did I say “lovely”? I’m sorry — I meant “hypocritical.” My bad.

Happy Easter.

Late Night FDL: Romney PAC Donated $10K to NOM Under the Radar, Fueling Anti-Gay Org’s Race-Based Strategy

By: Pam Spaulding Saturday March 31, 2012 8:00 pm

A $10K PAC donation is exposed in never-before-seen National Organization for Marriage financial documents. The Human Rights Campaign was exclusively able to obtain the private 2008 IRS filing from NOM via a whistleblower. It shows a contribution from an obscure Alabama PAC belonging to Romney, rather than from Mittens himself.

Madonna vs St. Petersburg Over LGBT Rights

By: Lisa Derrick Monday March 26, 2012 8:15 am

Madonna declared on her Facebook page that she will speak up against a new stringent anti-LGBT law in St. Petersburg, Russian which calls for fining anyone who promotes the false perception that traditional and non-traditional relationships are socially equal. Fines can be as high as $15,000, and St Petersburg city assemblyman Vitaly Milanov says he [...]

A group of five twenty-somethings were removed from a Rick Santorum rally Friday at the Liberty Heights Christian Academy after chanting “Mic check! Mic check! Mr. Santorum!” while two men in the group began to kiss. The crowd booed at first then began to chant “USA! USA!”

FDL Movie Night and Membership Party: Watch “8″ and Help Welcome New Members!

By: Lisa Derrick Monday March 5, 2012 5:00 pm

Dustin Lance Black’s play 8 -based on the trial transcripts of Perry v. Schwarzenegger, the landmark case which pitted marriage equality against its conservative foes, is one of the most important works of modern theater. A federal appeals court refused to allow the release of the trial videotapes because the trial judge, Vaughn Walker, had promised the pro-Prop 8 defendants that the videos would only be used by the court. 8 shows the arguments that justify bans on marriage for gay and lesbian couples, the testimony on marriage history from expert witnesses, and the arguments used to justify the ban on marriage equality.
