So when we ask America to recognize us for a month, to allow us to celebrate who we are, please acknowledge with us all that this recognition — and the acceptance that can then flow from it — is a petition from an under-minority: despised some places in this country, discriminated against most places, and hounded in others.

There’s an epidemic in America: due to the rapidly expanding homophobia tolerated, and rewarded, in our political sphere and due to more tolerance of bullying, LGBTQ teens are taking their own lives in despair and mistaken shame. America is rapidly reaching double-digits in teen suicides in the past few weeks, and these are the ones we know about. Why won’t Barack Obama speak out?

If you know a young person in crisis, can you please be sure that young person knows about It Gets Better and The Trevor Project? If you know a young person who is not in crisis — can you be sure? Ask. Be sure. We need to be diligent. As diligent as we need to be.

When our political leaders find it entirely acceptable to invoke homophobia and old stereotypes about predation to protect our children and our military from LGBT people, and those are the messages American children hear every single day — you’ve got to give them hope.
Kids are dying. It’s got to stop. We’ve all got to give them hope.
