The money that now goes to the cartels, with which they buy weapons and fund criminal enterprises of all sorts, could instead be paying teacher salaries and going into the coffers of states that badly need the revenue to meet their budgets.

A new poll of likely California voters shows 49 percent support a November ballot measure to legalize, regulate and tax marijuana, while 48 percent oppose it. Opposition is high among women and Latinos, with younger voters more strongly in favor.

New polls in western states such as California, Washington and Colorado show that lifting marijuana prohibition has strong plurality if not majority support. Ending the failed war on cannabis and replacing it with a system of legalization, regulation and taxation is becoming a mainstream view in some western states.

In the Western part of the US, legalizing cannabis is supported by a solid majority, 55%, and opposed by only 41%. This is important because citizens of California will be voting on a state ballot initiative to legalize, tax, and regulate marijuana in November. Groups in Washigton state and Oregon are also working to gather the necessary signatures to get similar marijuana legalization initiatives put on the ballot in those states, as well.

Of all the reasons to legalize marijuana, there is none more powerful than the need to stop feeding the prison industrial complex with bodies because of nonviolent drug charges. The United States has 5% of the world’s population and 25% of its prisoners. According to the FBI, someone is arrested every 18 seconds for a drug law violation. Four-fifths of those are for possession only, and nearly half were for possession of marijuana.

A new poll for the Pew Research Center found that an overwhelming 73% of Americans favor the legalization of medical marijuana for those who get a prescription from a doctor. Only 23% of the country opposes the idea of medical marijuana. While medical marijuana is only legal in a minority of states, and is officially illegal under current federal law, support for the idea is broad-based throughout the country.
