Apparently the LDS leadership has calculated that it will suffer another public relations disaster if it engages in an all-out effort to block the marriage equality bill, so it’s going for second best. It wants Mormons in Hawaii to gut the state’s public accommodations law so that businesses can discriminate against gays planning to marry.

After the invitation went out to Barack Obama and Mitt Romney to speak at the annual “Al Smith Dinner” — a huge Roman Catholic charitable fundraiser in New York City, Cardinal Timothy Dolan has been getting slammed by the Catholic right wing. Given how the USCCB has been ratcheting up the rhetoric against Democrats (especially Roman Catholic Democrats) for years, no one should be surprised at this reaction. As the prophet said, those who sow the wind shall reap the whirlwind.
I hope Cardinal Dolan likes the breeze.

Mitt Romney likely has the LDS community to thank for two of his six wins in yesterday’s Super Tuesday. While there are now entrance polls to verify this fact based on past voting patterns, it is very likely that the Mormon vote is what propelled Romney to both his big win in the Idaho caucus and his narrow victory in the Alaska caucus.

In 2008 a win for Obama was seen by African Americans as a sign of acceptance for a long marginalized group, and they voted overwhelmingly for Obama. A similar phenomenon occurred for Catholics and John Kennedy in 1960, but less attention has been paid this year to how the same dynamic with members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has been strongly helping Mitt Romney.

So we have learned that Mittens will pay about 15% taxes on his millions for 2011, and that while he was telling voters he was “unemployed,” he was underwriting anti-gay activity — including the Mormon church, which bankrolled the ant-gay Proposition 8 campaign in California.

Outgoing Ambassador to China Jon Huntsman, known everywhere as The Sane Moderate One (or The Other Mormon Dude) among 2012 Goat Rodeo participants, has a bit of an “oopsie” of the Ann Coulter variety when it comes to his voter registration…

During the Prop 8 aftermath I watched as the manager of the landmark El Coyote restaurant sobbed through a community meeting, trying to stave off a boycott of her family business. Her Mormon bishop had told her to write a check to support Prop 8, and she did, even though she claimed she loved her LGBT customers and employees. It was stunning and appalling. 8: The Mormon Proposition takes us into the mindset of Mormon leaders and their followers like Margy who were just following The Prophet’s orders.

At present we have an inefficient federal legislative branch with members chosen on the basis of geography and population. What is needed is a bold refashioning of government — a constitutional amendment to replace our present gridlocked mess with a far more elegant and effective system based on the proven efficiencies and priorities of The Market.
