Robert Murray, owner of the Ohio-based coal giant, Murray Energy Corporation, filed a defamation lawsuit against a prominent liberal blogger and The Huffington Post.
Filed on September 25 in Belmont County’s Court of Common Pleas, Murray’s complaint accuses Mike Stark, creator of FossilAgenda.com and Stark Reports, and The Huffington Post of defamation and invasion of privacy stemming from Mr. Stark’s September 20 article, “Meet the Extremist Coal Baron Bankrolling Ken Cuccinelli’s Campaign.”

If Chris Christie decides to run for President in 2016, which seems likely, expect him to quietly point to a Cuccinelli loss as a warning of what will happen if Republicans choose a hardcore cultural conservative to go up against the “Clinton machine.” The worse Cuccinelli does, the easier it will be for Christie to make his case.

I know I’m probably sounding like a broken record but this really is a major political story. I’ve never seen a party needlessly do so much damage to itself in less than a month with nothing of substance to show for it. The Republicans party seems to have come unmoored from even the basic political concerns, which has traditional kept things running during divided government.

There is at least one person in America is clearly benefiting from this government shutdown: Democratic candidate for governor of Virginia, Terry McAuliffe. With thousands of furloughed government employees in the state and most people blaming the Republican party for the shutdown, McAuliffe has seen a solid increase in his lead over Republican Ken Cuccinelli.

What is really driving McAulliffe’s lead in all recent polls is his strength with women. According to the Marist poll, McAulliffe has an impressive 18 point advantage among female voters. This “war on women” narrative is paying off in Virginia.

After siding with Consol Energy in a dispute regarding gas royalties for Virginia landowners, Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli received over $100,000 from Consol Energy and its subsidiaries. Our question for Mr. Cuccinelli is simple – given the conflicts of interest in taking money from a company involved in a lawsuit with landowners, will he give the money back?
