There are people who by choice describe themselves as anarchists, who are being jailed for refusing to testify before a federal grand jury in Seattle. They have been subjected to surveillance by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). They have been issued subpoenas to testify to a grand jury or be held in contempt and held in prison. Some of them have had their homes raided by the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force (JTTF). Some have had property seized for an investigation that is allegedly into property damage the FBI believes occurred in Seattle on May Day, however, the surveillance of activists by the FBI began in April.

State-sponsored propaganda fills corporate and establishment news reports ahead of the Republican National Convention (RNC) in Tampa, Florida. The word is that “improvised explosive devices” (IEDs) could be used by “domestic terrorists” at the RNC. There also will likely be individuals who engage in “black bloc” tactics, cover their face with a mask or bandanna to “conceal their identity” and throw “Molotov cocktails, flaming torches or acid-filled eggs at law enforcement,” according to a joint bulletin from the Department of Homeland Security and Federal Bureau of Investigation. A series of paramilitary-style raids were conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) against activists in Portland, Oregon, on July 25. Author and writer for GreenIstheNewRed.com, Will Potter, has been following this as it develops as well. His latest post highlights the search warrants that indicate the FBI was looking for “anti-government or anarchist literature.” Will and I had a discussion about the recent raids, grand juries, the FBI’s institutional drive to suppress radical groups, along with documents he uncovered through a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA). Here’s that interview.

Threat Matrix is a “biography” of the FBI’s development of counter terrorism capabilities from the days of state sponsored terrorism through the rise of domestic terrorism and to the new world of NGO
(non-governmental organizations) terrorism.

Oh this is rich. After NYPD Police Commissioner Ray Kelly got the residents and businesses surrounding the federal courthouse all ginned up with fear of holding the terrorism trial of Kalid Sheik Mohammed in NYC federal court, he has now brought a case to be tried in a NYS courthouse right next door.

Glenn Greenwald summarizes the missing media narrative in his Salon article this morning entitled “The FBI successfully thwarts its own Terrorist plot.” I recommend reading it all (ad click-through required). He brings motive to the fore: like almost every ‘terror’ suspect groomed by the FBI and then apprehended in America, 19-year-old Somali-American, Mohamed Osman Mohamud talked about retaliation for the United States bringing war to Muslims and his awful
