I am a purveyor of degenerate art. Tonight, “Two Johns and a Whore“, the art exhibition I created and curated, opens at Coagula Curatorial in LA’s Chinatown. The show features the gallery debut of award-winning performance artist John Fleck (one of the NEA Four) and controversial queer filmmaker John Roecker, plus 13 artists commenting on prostitution.

Last Sunday’s LA Times let the cat of the bag: If you read to the end in the awesome profile of the magazine-publisher-turned-successful-gallery-owner Mat Gleason, you’ll see that I’m an artist and I’m curating an art show that opens January 11, 2014 at Coagula Curatorial.

On holidays, Movie Night can be a surprise, and tonight is no exception. Santa gave us a huge present, and some relief for me too, since I hadn’t been able to find a guest available for the night after Christmas, until John Roecker guerrilla-released his dark romance, They’re All Out Without You, on Vimeo. The 30 minute feature, based on characters from Green Day’s punk rock opera album, American Idiot, delves into sex, death, love and angst, showcases the director’s narrative skills, knowledge of film and his actors’ talents.

The Go-Go’s were the first band to come out of the LA punk scene to break Billboard’s Top 40. And, more importantly, The Go-Go’s were the first all-female band to top the charts who wrote their own music and played their own instruments. Their debut album, Beauty and the Beat, held the number one spot on the Billboard chart for six consecutive weeks and went triple platinum, selling over 3 million copies.

Gay porn stars occupy an ambiguous and delicious role in modern gay culture: they are the gods and monsters of our sexual universe, really. The three most enticing words to hear about that man you’re ogling across the bar? “He does porn.” The most derisive insult to aim at him when he turns down your invite of company? “He does porn.”

Los Angeles based film director and artist John Roecker created this inspirational short film. It’s an artistic overview and a love letter to Los Angeles, punk rock and the creative spirit, plus a call for everyone to manifest their dreams. Though um, in places it’s NSFW.
