Governor John Hickenlooper (D), who was critical of legalization early on, now admits to CBS News there has been some clear benefits to the state with seemingly little change in the amount of people using marijuana.

Colorado now has laws governing the legal market for recreational marijuana. Today Gov. John Hickenlooper signed into law a set of bills that regulate all parts of the new industry including everything from licensing, how marijuana will be grown and labeling requirements.

Tancredo’s hard-right position on several issues should make it very difficult for him to win in a general election, but his base of support among conservatives and high name recognition means he should be a real force in what looks like a crowded Republican primary. Hickenlooper will either face Tancredo in the general election or another Republican who will probably first need to tack right to win an expensive primary.

CO Gov: Maes’ Low Total Could Cost GOP “Major Party” Status

According to Colorado state law, a party’s candidate for governor must get over 10 percent of the vote to retain the legal status of a major party. If Maes fails to cross that threshold, the Republican Party in Colorado would be demoted to minor party status. At only 13 percent, this is the lowest Maes has been in the polls. The general trend of all polling has Maes steadily losing support as the right-leaning vote coalesces around Tom Tancredo, who is running on the American Constitution Party ticket. Although the chance is probably remote, there is at least a possibility that Maes could fail to get 10 percent in the general election.

In the CO governor’s race, Democrat John Hickenlooper holds a large lead, thanks to a divide on the right between American Constitution Party candidate Tom Tancredo and Republican Dan Maes. Maes’s numbers have been dropping so fast, it could possibly even cost the Colorado Republican party their “major party” status.
