The Growing Partisan Issue of Holding Clapper Accountable for Lying to Congress

An increasing number of Republicans in Congress support holding Director for National Intelligence James Clapper accountable for lying to Congress in March, when he was asked about spying on Americans.

Members of the House Judiciary Committee, including Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner, who is the co-sponsor of legislation that would rein in some of the National Security Agency’s powers, urged Attorney General Eric Holder to have the Justice Department investigate Clapper.

Patriot Act Author Supports ACLU Lawsuit Against NSA Bulk Data Collection Program

One of the authors of the PATRIOT Act, which granted the Executive Branch of government broad powers to fight alleged terrorists after the September 11th attacks, has filed a brief in support of a lawsuit by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) that aims to challenge the NSA’s massive collection of Americans’ phone records.

The lawsuit, according to the ACLU, “argues that the dragnet, justified by the PATRIOT Act’s Section 215, violates the right of privacy protected by the Fourth Amendment as well as the First Amendment rights of free speech and association.” It also argues that the “program exceeds the authority that Congress provided through the PATRIOT Act.”

Holder’s Gutless Recusal & the Justice Department’s Seizure of AP Records

The answers given by Attorney General Eric Holder during his appearance before the House Judiciary Committee this afternoon certainly make it appear like his decision to recuse himself was a gutless decision, one he made because he knew when the press discovered the Associated Press had their phone records secretly seized they would be collectively outraged.
