I hope Obama’s new tone is going to be a precursor to a shift in policy but for now his administration claims they are just words. Actions are what really matter.

At issue is the fact that open enrollment doesn’t end until March 31st but if you don’t sign up for insurance by February 15th you will be hit with the individual mandate penalty. This means you can sign up for insurance during the open enrollment period and still be penalized for not getting insurance soon enough.
This is an idiotic way to run the individual mandate.

Today the President is meeting with key members of the Senate involved in NSA oversight, the day after the Guardian released details of the NSA’s X-Keyscore program. And since many of them have been publicly swearing up and down that the NSA has no programs which collect email content or telephone calls, it’s entirely possible that it is the first time many of them have been briefed on the details of X-Keyscore.

During a press briefing on Tuesday, White House spokesperson Jay Carney mechanically repeated a line when asked about the Justice Department’s seizure of the Associated Press’ phone records, suggesting President Barack Obama supports a “balance” between freedom of the press and national security.
“The president feels strongly that we need a—the press to be able to be unfettered in its pursuit of investigative journalism, and you saw, when he was a senator, the president co-sponsor legislation that would have provided further protections for journalists in this regard,” Carney said. “And he is also mindful of the need for secret and classified information to remain secret and classified in order to protect our national security interests. So there are — there is a careful balance here that must be attained.”

A symptom of the news that the establishment media organization, the Associated Press, had their phone records targeted by the Justice Department as part of an apparent investigation into a leak has been that reporters have been more aggressive in their questioning of officials at press conferences.

Apparently the pushback against raising the Medicare eligibility age was strong enough that Obama has taken if off the table, but the President would still support switching Social Security to the chained-CPI.

Obama doesn’t want to get around the debt ceiling, he wants to beat the Republicans on it. Obama seems to believe he can win at a game of chicken, despite his rather abysmal track record so far.

You will hear virtually nobody claim that chained CPI represents a more accurate way of determining the cost of living for senior citizens on Social Security, because if they were honest about it, they would tailor an inflation index to the real costs of seniors. The only benefit to chained CPI is that it saves the government money at the expense of senior citizens. That’s it. It’s a back-door way of lowering the benefit.

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), which has been working to force the disclosure of documents on the Central Intelligence Agency’s (CIA) targeted killing program, filed a response to the government, which continues to claim it can neither confirm nor deny the existence of the CIA program.
